Why do sites break up downloads into smaller files? I think most of us here find this annoying since it seems to be raised as a ‘con’ in many reviews. A site has various scenes available for download but the complete scene is broken down into several smaller files. Why do sites do this? If it is a 100MB scene and they break it down into 4 25MB pieces, aren’t the vast majority of users going to download every piece for the complete scene? So the bandwidth for the site is no different is it? Surely there can’t be that many low-speed internet users still around that the sites are making it easier for them. Thoughts?

Honestly I don't mind it. I guess everyone here must have T1 connections. LOL I have the slowest DSL you can get, so really I have no problem with them cutting them up, especially if the site doesn't allow resume. However since most sites do allow resume, I normally pick the one big clip if they have it. I think they keep them split up to make it the most widely accessible. That way your not pissing off fans with slower connections, just like they keep low res images and high res images. But I do agree that they need both options, the clips for those who want it and the full scene for those who want that.

I always hold it against a site when they don't have full scene downloads. But I guess if a scene is almost 2GB, it might not be a bad thing to split it up if the site doesn't allow resuming downloads. But that's a whole different topic. I don't think most sites give a shit whether or not we can resume downloads. They just take whatever the server software gives them. It amazes me sometimes that big sites still offer split scenes, but they would know if people are downloading them and they must be. Some people will always be on the lower end of the download speed spectrum and need smaller files. I'm sure there are people out there in Montana with unreliable internet service like satellite who have no choice but to download the vids that are split into 20 parts.

I agree as well. Sometimes I'll want the whole shebang, but sometimes just one segment has the action that I'm after. As long as the maximum available quality of both the segments and the full video are on a par, then you've got the best of both worlds, or in this case a planet and its moons (?). I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Wittyguy's explanations seem to say it all. But I don't know if I agree 100% that the first two reasons don't cut it anymore. My DSL connection is probably even slower than Jeffrey99's. My fastest download speed is about 151-160 kbs for a single file. If I download more than one file at a time, I am lucky if the download speeds for the files total 151-160 kbs. On some download connections my speed can drop to 20 kbs. So I would not even want to think about downloading 1 GB files or larger. Edit: When I had dial-up, my download speed was 3-4 kbs for a single file. So DSL is a vast improvement. Edited on Mar 24, 2010, 04:04am

I don't split my videos or zipfiles but I get complaints when files get too large from the surprising large number of members who are still on dial-up or pseudo broadband connections. If the file is broken up then can start enjoying the content while downloading the update. Also with the example of a 2GB file (I don't use files larger than about 400MB myself) that would also be a nightmare to upload to my server. It would be very tempting to split that into 4-5 parts simply to make it easier and quicker (I could announce the first parts as they arrive rather than waiting for the whole lot to upload). I think it has allot to do with money and time. Servers cost money to use bandwidth, and depending on the host used it can cost allot to give large file access. I do not blame the webmasters completely as their bottom line is affected at times by how much you use. But I do not like small cut up scenes. As many times they do not look where they cut and you end up ending a BJ scene mid way. Nice ( sarcasm ) Toad Since 2007
