A Big Thank You To Epoch

After logging in for the first two days of WTF Pass membership, I logged in after the weekend only to find I could not access any of the sites. I mailed both WTF support and also the mail address on the password page to no avail. No reply, nothing to give a reason for the lock out. After giving it more than 24 hours I contacted Epoch.

They replied within a couple of hours, and said they would try to do get me access again. They were true to their word. At least WTF replied to them. The one thing that surprised me was the reason given for the lock out.

Maybe I am slightly paranoid in thinking they didn't like my comment in the Comments section of Porn Users, and that was the reason for the lockout, or maybe the reason is a genuine one. If so, that has never happened to me before, though I have heard of it happening to others. I use one computer from one place, and don't share passwords.

Whatever happened, I would like to say a big thanks to Epoch. I cancelled my membership to WTF after their lack of response to my four emails, and would not join again, but Epoch are one of the best.

Thanks Epoch.

Below is a part of the mail where it states the reason for being locked out.

"Hello.

Seriously glad the CC card company did the right thing. Since 2007

A thought. If there is a possibility that you may at some time in the future, or have in the past, written a scathing or negative site review you may consider logging on to a paysite with something other than your PU screen name.

The government ain't the only ones gettin in your shit. unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.

This was long ago so no longer a member at a site, but had something similar happen. I never thought it was cause of my review here. But I rated the site moderate nothing horrible. Since 2007

Yes Micha, that's a good point, but I am always proud of my reviews and comments, and take a lot of time to get them right. Of course I don't know in advance if I'm going to like a site or not, so maybe it would be better to choose a different name, just in case.

I like the new avatar Toad - up there with the poison arrow frogs, and the two smiling friend frogs, ones. Edited on Mar 14, 2012, 07:10pm

I always try to encourage users to use a different user name on each site. Otherwise once someone knows your username they've got half the information they need to get into any websites you've joined. It would be easy for someone to use a forum like this and get a pretty good idea of which sites you're a member of. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Yes Ed, I agree. Sometimes a site automatically makes your email address the username, but I quite often use a squirrel name when they don't, because it is very common on the internet. If it were a very individual name I wouldn't use it, but I think your view is becoming increasingly correct, and therefore it is becoming an increasingly worrying situation.

It pisses me off because I'm not doing anything illegal (although neither are those who try to obtain information legally), but I consider it an invasion of privacy. That's why I have not used Google since they changed their policy. Bing works just as well.

Should I even worry about my privacy or let it all hang out? If I want to retain it, I don't want anyone sticking their nose into my business. I am feeling slightly ambivalent at the moment. What if it does no harm? Maybe I should be more angry - though I am nearly almost as permanently angry as RB. My default setting and gut instinct is to treat all bastards like the enemy until I know or suspect different. Hang on let's check - yes anger setting very high as per normal. Sounds like a Brute Force Attack with your login being one that was hacked.
We get them all the time so found it easier for us and the customer to install a password retrieval system whereby the user can retrieve a new password instantly using their e-mail address when they've been blocked.
There are no privacy issues to worry about and most site owners should know it's rarely the customers fault as sharing passes isn't as common as BFAs. http://www.suburbanamateurs.com/freeview/

Thanks Simon, yours sounds like a good system. I have never had this happen to me before, but maybe it was a genuine attack on my login, rather than pique from the newtork.

Also, what happens a lot is that when any site that has a membership signup is hacked (porn or otherwise), one of the first things those hackers will do is take those login names and passwords and try to use them on other sites to see if they work. So another thing that is possible is that some site that you have signed up to before got hacked (for example, DigitalPlayground.com was hacked a week or two ago), someone did a Google search on your username and found out you had just joined that site by the comment you left here, and used (or sold) that username/password combo.

That makes a lot of sense as well, so it's possible that's what happened. I rarely use the same password, but I do use the same username a lot of the time. Maybe I'll have to change it when they don't use the email as username.

It's new to me too! What is annoying though, is it took Epoch to make them reply. If not for Epoch, I don't think WTF would have replied, and I'd have had about two days use of membership, barely enough to do a review. Not a network I'd go with again.

This type of thing is scary, how are they getting these passwords from people who don't share passwords,It happened to me last year on another network, I got back on the site within a couple of hours but not good to know somehow your password was hacked. It isn't usually anything to worry about from your end.
If you want to know more about how they do it you can do a search for "brute force attack" and "dictionary attack" and you'll find explanations on the lengths hackers go to exploit security systems.
From wikipedia:
"As of 2011, commercial products are available that claim the ability to test up to 2,800,000,000 passwords a second on a standard desktop computer using a high-end graphics processor."

One word passes all in lower case will make it very easy to hack.
Choosing difficult passwords using a mix of capital and lower case letters, numbers and permitted symbols, with at least 8 characters, will make it a lot more difficult for them.
A decent security system will block the username as soon as it's been exploited. It's how the system then treats the authorised user in getting back into the site that's the issue.
I realised a long time ago that over 90% of blocked usernames weren't the fault of the authorised user which is why I installed a system that allows the user to retrieve a new random password instantly, as often as he likes.
There's no reason to treat customers like criminals and totaly block access because of hackers.

Sorry for the long post but hope that explains it somewhat. http://www.suburbanamateurs.com/freeview/
