Would you give a monogrammed gift to someone whose initials spelled something potentially weird or embarrassing such as UFO, SOS, SOB, BBW, BBG, BGG, ATM, CUM, etc.? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Drooler - were the 70s the same blur for you as they were for me? What in the hell made you think of a question like that? : - )
And, yeah, I'd give the gift.

Of course, this reminds me of a guy I used to work with named Dick Cox. His parents most definitely should've been shot. I never bothered to ask him, but I always wondered if his middle name is Peter. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I'd just awoke from a nap with the TV on and there was this ad for shirts that included monogramming. Somehow, and this I can't explain, I started thinking of "ATM" and how funny that would be!

When I was in college, a group of us would sit around and trade stories of funny names and potentially funny ones.

Frankly, I hate monogrammed stuff for myself and have only used it for luggage, the reason being a purely practical one. My real initials don't spell out anything "special."

But for a gag gift -- for someone else, of course -- could be! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

When I lived in LA, for a while I worked in an appraisal dept of a bank, which no longer exists - too bad, it was a good bank.

Anyway, the appraisers used to have a good time taking pictures of the signs in the yards in Vietnamese and Cambodian neighborhoods, where the real estate agents to get in touch with her often named Phuc Yu and other such names that touched the appraisers' inner Beavis & Butthead.

I had a professor named Richard Gross. He went by Dick. Thus making his name Gross, Dick. I would think it would make for some interesting high school hazing, but he is actually a very respectable man.

I would say to go ahead and get it for them. People get used to those sort of things, usually, and sometimes even find humor in them. I had a classmate with the last name Cox and he told me I would never come up with a cock joke he had not heard. I tried many, even some I thought were original, until one day I did come up with something new and he loved it.

If it is someone you care enough about to buy a gift for that would have custom lettering I would say to put no thought into at all. They will like it. If they would not like it than I am sure they would have let you know long before the consideration to buy them the gift. I knew someone named Richard Dick, so that made him Dick Dick. I've always had a hard time calling someone Dick. Regardless that it is acceptable or not.

I guess you can always try to limit the monogram to only 2 letters. Long live the Brown Coats.

People really need to think of these things before naming their kids. Often times the courts will call people and ask them if they are sure they want to name their kids certain ways if they are overly odd and would likely cause harm to the kid. A stupid couple in Hawaii, the Hula's, named their girl "Tulu Does The Hula" as her legal name. Are you kidding me! The girl was so ashamed of it her closest friends did not even know. She went by "K" to everyone. A year or so ago the court took special custody of her because her parents refused to change it to something reasonable and allowed the girl to choose her own name. Of course she was returned since otherwise they were not bad parents. But seriously, what kind of stupid ass names their own child something like that? Aren'y parents generally supposed to want to provide opportunities for their children? These people obviously did not go for that, in reality they would have caused a great deal of trouble for her and closed many doors all in the name of being a stupid ass! Dweezil Zappa, from what I've seen, is perfectly OK with the weird name he was given.

Generally I agree with you just the same. Parents can't know how their kids are going to deal with this world if they're given an odd name, so why take chances? It's really selfish and short-sighted of them to insist on naming their kids something bizarre, like Luv4Forever or a vegetable or an animal -- or just "Animal!" I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

But as a side note, real names can produce a chortle when they're on actual tombstones. Examples: Sleeper, Stoner, Ringer, and Bye. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Sep 14, 2009, 03:47pm

Nicolas Cage has a son he named Kal-el, which is the name of the baby that became Clark Kent (aka Superboy and later Superman). I doubt Nicolas Cage's wife is the one who came up with that name. Nicolas Cage is supposed to be a big fan of comic books.
