Video Storage Strategies I downloaded 1TB of videos from YES-Movie. So far, I've dl'd 500GB from a teen site. Still counting. And so on. At the rate I'm going, I'm gonna have to fill up my spare room with hard drives. I'm a relatively new collector of porn videos and I have nearly 3TB so far. The size of one HD video often exceeds 1GB. So, where does everyone store everything? Do you backup? At this time, I have more than sufficient space having bought a docking bay with 4 disks that holds a total of 16TB. With other external drives and my internal drive, I have 20TB. I backup everything including my videos, so double whatever I have to determine my needs. I'm going to do some pruning, but still, I'm going to run out of room in a year the way I figure it. I have other things to store on my drives, not just porn. I'm curious how others handle this issue.

(1) don't keep the crap, even if you are a "completist" (2) if data doesn't exist twice, it doesn't exist. You must back everything up So yes, it might involve a lot of disk drives!

Eight years ago, when porn online vidoes were in the 150MB range the the same issues was here because you could fill up 200 Gigs fairly easy. What I do now is I have only two main drives for Porn, I sift through and remove what I will never watch. Often previews on a site look good but when watched they are not what we expected. Takes too long to find what I need and life is too short to spend a day sifting through and leaving what you do not. I have a preload area where I sift delete what I do not want and file the rest . Since 2007

I've been actively buying and downloading porn for well over a decade now, and up until recently I could best be described as a hoarder. I almost never deleted anything. This past summer I did delete a bunch of old, low-res stuff that did free up some space. One thing to keep in mind is that the furious pace at which you're uploading won't continue. You probably downloaded 1.5TB recently because you hit the mother lode of stuff you like. That won't happen all that often. If you have 16+TB of space I suspect you have a long way to go before you need to worry. Try to revisit some of what you downloaded occasionally. You'll probably find that a lot of it no longer interests you so you can probably delete it. On the other hand, I have poor quality old porn still in my collection simply because I like those particular scenes. Neither of us needs to justify those choices to anyone. I have 15 external drives, mostly WD. When I cleaned out some old porn I also eliminated any drive that was less than 1TB. Many of my drives are 2TB which means the same physical size holds twice the data, and as hard drive capacities increase I'll start buying those when the price per GB is acceptable. I also backup everything. I have never suffered a complete failure of an external drive, but the probability of that happening sometime is high so I backup regularly. I backup onto the larger kind of external drives, the kind that also require their own AC power, because those are much less expensive per GB and since they're only for backup storage the reduced convenience is no issue. As for drive storage, find something that works for you. I have my primary drives in a locked briefcase at home because no one would question that given my circumstances. A tool box, tackle box or even a gym bag might work in your case. Storing backups is a little trickier since good practice dictates that these be stored in a separate location. But since the primary reason you're backing up is to protect against drive failure, you may not see the need to store those in a separate location. If you choose to find a different place for your backups, my advice is that it be convenient to get to otherwise you probably won't backup as much as you should. Or keep you active backup drive nearby and stash your dormant ones. I hope some of this helps!

I think I'll print that and stick it on the wall in my computer area.

Great post! And you're right, I'll slow down. Eventually. Right now I'm like a kid in Mike's Candy Store left alone with Playboy and Swinger and baseball cards a million years ago. -) That was actually a fantasy of mine up until I was about 12.

One of the best choices for storing videos is Google Photos. I started one week ago and allready have nice collections. Good thing is that, you can share with other users. If someone like to share just say here

^Welcome to PU. Since you are new here, you should know that this is a forum for porn users and industry members. Unless you are talking about your photos, to which you have the rights, you really shouldn't offer to share them here. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

MY BEST GUESS IS THAT MANY GOVERNMENTS, INCLUDING THE GOOD OLD USA, HAVE ACCESS TO NOT JUST ONLINE STORAGE DATA, BUT MOST DATA STORED ON COMPUTERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. LEGAL AND QUASI-LEGAL ACCESS. IF YOU READ THE NEWS, THERE ARE CONSTANT ARTICLES THAT STATE THE US GOVERNMENT KEEPS ASKING FOR BACK-DOORS INTO CLOUD STORAGE, ISP DATA, BIG-BUSINESS PROGRAMS, ETC., ETC. THAT'S IN ADDITION TO THE SPY AGENCIES THAT ARE ALLOWED (LEGAL AND QUASI-LEGAL) TO SNOOP ON COMPUTERS AND ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES THAT USE THE NET, OR COMMUNICATE ELECTRONICALLY (CELL PHONES, WHATEVER). JUSTIFIED BY POLICE AND TERRORIST CONCERNS, OF COURSE.

You hit a nerve. Where does it end? Who decides when and under what circumstances it's justified to infringe on individual privacy? Where do we draw the line on torture? Do you think our forefathers would condone the current state of affairs? I don't pretend to have any answers and these are subjects that have and will continue to be debated with likely no resolution. However, we should be mindful whenever the government infringes on privacy in the name of security. Privacy enables people to be free to think and act as they please without unreasonable and unfair influence or control by others. Otherwise, society can become totalitarian and not unlike a world painted by George Orwell's "1984." As an aside, I remember having heated arguments with a friend when Giuliani was mayor of NYC in the 90s. He made the streets safe or safer to walk again, but at what cost? /End of rant

^^^ Now you guys have got me second guessing my cloud storage strategy. I saw that Crashplan has a $5/month unlimited cloud storage plan. This is cheaper per month than my cost of local storage even when you spread that cost over 10 years. Local storage for my collection is expensive, one copy ties up 8 bays filled with 4 to 6 TB drives. So, I could save money and have a safer backup strategy by moving one of my backups to the cloud. I would go from having 3 local copies with one as offline backup to two local and one remote. Crashplan has the option to encrypt everything through their software, but I didn't trust that. I wrote a script that uses 7-Zip and AES-256 encryption to encrypt the entire contents of a specified folder or drive into a series of compressed archives. This is what I am sending over to Crashplan. There are two reasons why I think it should be fine. The first is that AES-256 is strong encryption. Even if it is not so strong after my backup has sat online for 5 years, there is still the second reason. No one should really care that much about my porn collection. I obtained it all legally anyways. Anyway, what do you guys think? I honestly worry about losing my local copies somehow, or needing to access my collection internationally without carrying 8 drives through customs, more than I do about unauthorized snooping. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

It may be an age thing, but I can't imagine ever finding myself using cloud storage for anything unless I'm forced to, and even then I won't be happy. That goes for porn and music.

^Some call it age but I prefer to call it experience. I wonder how many people today under the age of 30 look at technology and ask themselves this simple little thing that we old farts have learned the hard way. If it looks too good to be true than it probably is. People have been sold on the Cloud is the be all and end all of saving data but who as ask him or herself why a company would offer such a service. Especially when many of them do it for nothing or a tiny amount of money. Long live the Brown Coats.

I wish there was a viable option to store porn in the cloud. As was stated, I don't care that much if someone gains access. It's all legal. My feeling is that even if it wasn't cost prohibitive to store a huge amount of data, it would take forever to upload it, or at least weeks. Then again, I haven't looked into this sort of thing for a number of years. Over the years, I've grown lazy. I have no backup. It's such a hassle not to mention expensive. I've been using the same 20TB of hard disks since I began saving porn around the time I joined PU. At first, it was sufficient space to store my files plus do a backup. Slowly, I ran out of space. And I regularly delete files as I grow tired of them. As my drives get older, I get more paranoid. As for storing other stuff in the cloud, I'm a couple of months or so north of age 30 and I love the option. I have a Mac and use iCloud. It makes life so convenient to be able to access my files anywhere. I don't know if I could live without it now.

This is where that saying plays in - I get what I pay for. With my plan I get about 1 Mbps up, and at this rate, it will take me several years of constant uploading to get everything backed up. this is the drawback of the unlimited plan. Most faster plans are around $5/month per TB. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

I'm just glad we've moved on from the time where you had to find space to store magazines and VHS tapes.

Quick answer, it doesn't matter how you obtained your porn, most cloud services don't want anything to do with it since you might have materially that could be legally deemed "obscene". While encryption is a fine idea for cloud storage it still doesn't get around the fact that you're putting your trust in a corporation that will never tell you how or what it does with your files and where they are kept. Never mind the fact about their own security protocols or lack thereof. There is also the fact that a cloud service could go out of business some day. What then? What if they get hit with a DNS attack some day? Porn is still enough of a taboo subject for the world that in my mind it's not worth putting it out there in the cloud in my book. I may be a bit paranoid on this front but given the unknowns and the monthly costs it still seems like loading up on externals is still the safest and cheapest way to go long term. If you got like 50 tb of data then you seriously need to pare the collection down since you could never look at it all in your lifetime. Edited on May 11, 2017, 12:48pm

No at 50 TB yet, but at 26 TB and definitely headed towards 50 TB. Paring down the collection is good advice, and it is the right answer for 99% of porn users at some point. I made the decision not to do that, and instead invested my time and money in setting up a server with 24 internal bays. It's not the answer for the vast majority of people, but for me has been a fun project. Now that I put in the work to get it running and learned the basics of Windows Server 2012 R2, it's got many added benefits. I run Plex Media Server on it to stream movies and music to our TV. It can also stream to a computer or smartphone if I want. It can handle large Crashplan backups, which use progressively more RAM for de-duplication as they proceed, about a GB RAM per TB backup. I can also easily share stuff within our network. For example, my wife just asked if I could give her some Brazzers videos, and all I had to do was create a network share for her. You can make network shares with most common OS's of course, but Windows Server 2012 R2 has a nice interface for setting them up. Plus it runs reliably 24/7. Reliability is ultimately what drove me to buy a server. When my consumer 8 bay enclosure corrupted all drives storing the entire most up to date copy of my collection twice, I decided that I would store at least one copy on server hardware. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

IS THERE ANY WAY YOU CAN STREAM MOVIES AND MUSIC TO MY PHONE OR LAPTOP? I MIGHT EVEN BE WILLING TO PAY A MONTHLY FEE, IF THE SERVICE IS UP TO MY STANDARDS. BUT A ONE-TIME CHARGE WOULD BE EVEN BETTER!
