The state of porn today

Gee I never even thought to mention the name "pornhub" for fear I would be banned from here for life. Fact is, not so much that the porn is free but the pay for play porn sites have learned nothing from Pornhub's success. Ignoring technical changes such as 3D, porn sites have failed to present anything new in twenty years. As a former porn critic who has seen over 1,000 sites I know from whence I speak. To give you one example, there is no porn site that I'm aware of that presents amateur porn of the type you find on the tube site. Many, although not all of the material marked as " home made " appears to include women/men who come over as...well, real. No heavy makeup, no phony scripts, no casting agents...just real women, and men, who might actually be " the girl next door " Please don't say " yes but site Private Society and to some extent, Net Video Girls is....I realize I'm generalizing here, but only a wee bit. If you fail to be inventive you die!

I'm not saying that "tubes" are anywhere near perfect...they lack in quality to some degree, the ads are a pain, but it does harkin back to an age when porn first appeared on the net. I'm old enough to remember when " Homegrown Video" really was homegrown. Sites such as Dirty Debutante's paved the way for what later became "gonzo porn". In some ways, the homemade porn presented by Pornhub takes me back to the roots.

I must also say that "free" is not all bad. The price structure used in paid porn sites is insane! Yes I'll pay $30 bucks for a porn site I've never visited is worth the money. One hundred or so high quality, say two years worth of updates is worth it. But why pay for a three month membership? Why should I go back and pay the same additional membership unless say two years worth of upgrades is available. Are these webmasters so stupid that NOT one gives you a big break for brand loyalty? (Oh, and once and for all lets cut out the crap of "upsales" and opt out/in check boxes, or the need to cancel. As a former member I should get a huge discount! Oh lets give a shout out to the people at TBP! You do a great job keeping the reader informed and although I seldom feel the need to post, this forum is appreciated! Well I've had my say..what say you??

Brand loyalty is a concept that died many years ago.
The drive is for new subscribers, who get better discounts for a service than people who are already subscribers.

This is found everywhere.
If you are a member of Time Warner (now Spectrum), you will get a higher price than a new subscriber for the same service.

This is true for most businesses.
Sign up for a newspaper sub, and you get a cheaper rate than current subscribers.

I'm not into VR porn, but a number of site have offered it for years.

Also the 4K Ultra High Definition videos.

So porn sites are trying to keep up with the times.

Many sites are offering a quality product for a very low price.

It's crazy what you can get for your porn-spending $ today as compared to when the internet was a newer thing. Many porn sites are spending a lot less money than they did back then - doing less shoots, doing less expensive shoots, recycling older content, etc. But the volume when what used to be many separate sites are bundled together as one in many cases, makes up for it.

Hmmm... there may be some interesting stories in there. Consider sharing.

On point, however, I share a lot of your thoughts. I'm frequently annoyed that as a regular subscriber to some sites that I still get no respect. I'm not saying a site has to go out of it's way to get my business, but simple things would go a long way. Not having pre-checked cross-sells would be a good start. Sure, offer me that additional site but don't check the box for me. If it's something I'm interested in and I think it's a good deal I'll join on own. Then, once I am a member and behind the paywall don't make your site a minefield. I'm looking at you Bang Bros.

Lastly, don't make cancelling my membership difficult. Two billing sites make this easy and painless - CC Bill and Epoch. Just use them or follow their lead. There are other decent billers too. I've subscribed to many sites that haven't used a biller but handled the transactions in-house. Many of those have been secure and easy to cancel. But some sites use billers that make things difficult for members. There are sites that I won't join anymore simply because cancelling is such a pain in the ass. So the site foregoes future memberships from me and hopes that they can cause enough people to end up with an additional months since cancelling is so hard. That's not a great business model.

I'm not sure if this was on point or not. It turned into a bit of a rant.

Hi all! First to Fireone's comments. "Brand loyalty is a concept that died many years ago" I beg to differ strongly! Consider Amazon, Netflix, Bank of America, TBP, to name but a very few. It's just the Walmart who give customer service a bad name. The advent of 4k and 3D are just technical developments much like dial up ( remember that ) to cable. which makes a great lead in to Admirals comments about CCbill, a third party biller that provides excellent customer service even to some customers who must be crazy as bed bugs.

Admiral...no not a rant. In fact, right on point. I salute you. On the subject of being a porn critic it might be interesting to ask the guys and gals here at TBP what story they might tell.

I might say that I took the job very seriously. The most important aspect was always to remain objective. I might often find that I didn't love the material but different strokes ( a pun ) for different folks. when I felt bias against the subject matter or I could pass it off to another reviewer. A review often took four or five hours over several days to download and evaluate all the same getting Walmart like compensation. one thing I did was to write to the webmaster after the review was published to gain their response. Although only about half ever responded some had well thought out points that did require some changes, many were incoherent,a few replied "f**k you. I must also tell you the truth, it sometimes required taking a week off so as not to become bored to death.

I had a love/ hate relationship with my editor, who was by the way, also the owner. often times he failed to appreciate my sense of humor or my syntax, but he never over ruled my opinions. He later sold the business and went on to become a very rich publisher while I found myself retired. Oh well!

On the whole I feel that the people here at TBP do a great job! I'd love to hear from one of them as to their points of view. Pornpundit

One thing that I have never understood is any legitimate business, regardless of what sector it is in, trying to pull a fast one on its customers.

That said the porn industry seems to have a few major players these days that churn out high-end productions to sell at rock bottom prices. They tend to be glossy but unimaginative and quickly feel repetitive.

I think they're less interested in customer retention and more just sheer volume of signups - which is the business model used by lots of non-porn companies - like telecoms.

To answer the OP, question.

The quality, of tube sites even YouTube changes when you pay for. Almost all tube sites have 720P, for free access.

However, most pay sites have a minimum of 1080p and 4K, also many have virtual reality as well. The VR, at most websites is subpar and quality is noticeable. We have to remember that 720p is old technology, and yet the free sites are giving this to others because it is old technology often only a few megabytes in size. However a 4K, or 1080p can be several gigs in size depending on the length of movie.

I actually think things are moving along as they should, things that are tend to be free, or often of a lower quality. A good example is listening to music on YouTube. The quality of music on YouTube is nothing compared to the MP3 if you purchase it. As the same concept here these websites provide the material and make the money off of advertisements. However that varies on the amount of income they can have so they make a lower quality and encourage you to purchase higher quality access.

So I like to change the topic here, and state it's not that these are free. The low quality is free and for high quality access you need to pay at these two sites also that's been my experience the majority the time if you want a higher resolution you have to pay, but that access. Why yes sometimes the higher-quality resolution is made free but it is not the rule of most sites, Since 2007

Thanks for taking the time to write that. It's interesting to hear the perspective of someone who was paid (though not much I guess!) for doing something that PU members do as a hobby. Even though it is just a hobby I take it seriously and it's obvious that many others do too. A review takes me several days to write and edit and for the past couple of years I won't even start to write until I've done a deep dive on the site AND watched a lot of what they have to offer.
