What do you think about sites passing on/selling personal info?

I get a fair share of porn spam, maybe 50 emails a day. I can put up with that, even though I don't like some of the titles e.g 'farmyard slut sucks horses big c0ck'. Since I have never had any interest in beastiality porn, I dont particularly like getting sent that type of shit.

What alarms me now is I have started to receive regular porn spam emails with my full name in the title. The only place I have entered that sort of information is on supposedly secure billing pages. So what else could have been given out... my address? my card details?

When you join sites they claim to not pass your details on, but this is obviously not the case. The sites that are doing this is increasing my chances of fraud and identity theft. I would like the perpetrators of this invasion of privacy to be pinned to the floor and teabagged by some sweaty sumo wrestlers.

Are any other people concerned about their personal info landing in the wrong hands?

I just checked my spam folder and I noticed some spam messages with my real name in the message subject and body. I am 100% sure I've only used my real name in conjunction with that email address for porn sites so there's obviously a leak in some porn site / payment processor. My spam is deleted once it's a month old and the first ones start a month ago so it may have been going on for some time without noticing.

I believe even sites that use ccbill get access to you full personal info (minus credit card number) including home address. I recall seeing it in a ccbill demo. Although I am not sure webmasters are offered the kind of bulk extraction system that email harvesting requires.

Since most of us subscribe to different sites I would be willing to bet that the indiscretion lies with a billing company. I've even been getting spam containing my correct middle name, something I only tell the credit card processor.

I have been bombed by spam for about a year now. I really have no idea where it all comes from.

What you should have seen is the job application i just filled out Friday night. These people asked about everything. By the end of it I thought they might even ask to attend my next family reunion! This damn thing took nearly 2 hours!

The point here is that my name and address do not bother me too much, but when people start asking SSN, drivers license number, and want to even get a credit check on my I start getting a little antsy. I do not even know what my credit score is! I do not have money to spend on those services and getting it for free is a total hassle. Besides, making me pay to see information that has a profound impact on me is plain extortion!

Anyway, now that I have rambled on for a bit. I get a ton of spam, but I check my email several times a day so deleting it does not take long when it does not build up. Billing companies get paid for every transaction they process, so if they can boost the amount of members they boost their profits. Thus, spam is used. Sending emails is free so this is a no brainer for them, and most people just get mad at the site that the email is advertising for, not those who actually sent the email. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

I have noticed an increase of porn spam in the last 12 months. Most of mine tend to be about low cost meds and girls having sex with farm animals(Yeah that sounds fun...NOT). A few of these used my full name so they had to come from a site I joined or the credit card
processor. I sometimes get as many as 30 per day. They all go to my junk box, but still it shouldn't happen at all. Long live the Brown Coats.

I also get a lot of spam for sites like farm sex and networks that are not listed on TBP. I never realized that my billing processor may be involved. I always thought it was some disreputable site that I had joined. Thanks for the info. By the way Badandy, I also agree that job applications should never have credit check authorizations. I have even been asked to authorize a credit check for jobs that I already have. No company should ever base a hiring decision on whether you pay your bills on time or ever filed bankruptcy. You can still be a good and valuable employee. The same for your social security number. With that number, anyone can easily steal your identity. Unfortunately, many companies feel that they are a branch of Big Brother.

Can I suggest my solution?

Using the premium option of webmail like yahoo, $20 per year, you can create unlimited alias email adresses all based around a common 'root', unrelated to your true email address which is never revealed. So you can make a new email address for every site you sign up to. You can name it after the site too, e.g. MyRoot-DodgyPornSite@yahoo.com

Here's yahoo's link:

http://antispam.yahoo.com/addressguard

So if you get spammed, a) you know which site abused your email and b) you can simply cancel that disposable/alias email address. Your underlying yahoo email account remains working and unknown to the spammer.

Incoming email from each disposable address can also be auto-redirected to a chosen folder too, so your much wanted discount porno promotion doesn't arrive in the same inbox onlookers might see you using.

Don't give sites you don't trust any email address you value.

Gmail offers something similar. You can get as many addresses you want by adding a plus sign after your email address. So, if you own user at gmail.com, you can also receive mail sent to user+dodgypornsite at gmail.com.

The problem is spammers are also aware of this fact and they can simply strip the part after the + sign. I don't know if the yahoo option works the same way but with the hyphen.

A little less known feature is that you also own all the "dotted versions" of your gmail address. So, you may also receive mail sent to u.s.e.r at gmail.com, u.ser at gmail.com, us.er at gmail.com and so on.

In any case, it's not as scary the fact some spammer got my email address as the fact that some spammer has my real name connected to an email address when those two items of data have only been connected by me on allegedly secure payment pages where my credit card number was also present.

Interesting what you say about gmail, I hadn't come accross that feature.

The yahoo scheme ('AddressGuard') lets you choose a root completely unconnected with you or your true yahoo email address. So whilst you might be John.Smith@yahoo.com, your disposables may be pornfan-dodgypornsite@yahoo.com, pornfan-dodgypaymentsite@yahoo.com etc, leaving nothing at all for machine or person to interpret. All cancellable at a click, too.

I've just checked with a disposable yahoo email sent to gmail, and there's no name at all showing, so the spammers have literally nothing to work on.

It's bullshit all the info an employer demands if you are applying for a job, or especially after you have already been hired.

Problem is that Americans' lives are heavily centered around their jobs -- it is their life, and damn near everything else comes second without hesitation. We also rely on them for healthcare and retirement plans so dearly that when employers ask for private information ("private" only in the sense that they don't know it yet, not whether it is any of their business) all we can do is give it to them or start looking for a new job.

Well, enough ranting...the internet is all about communication and there are always going to be one greedy asshole stealing info for every honest person not stealing it. I've started to notice some spam with my real name appearing in my porn email box. Most of the time when I sign up for a site my personal info is not entered until the time I am directed to the billing processor which leads me to believe that it's actually the billing processors who are starting down the road of selling info.

Like most of us, I don't bother to read the privacy statements associated with websites and billing processors. I don't have too much problem with my name popping up because that happens a lot with regular spam I get in my regular email account. A name is a name and since my name isn't terribly unique it probably won't lead to too much damage. It's just another level of personalized marketing hoping to land the next rich Nigerian prince victim.

What would concern me more is putting up personal information on websites like Facebook (which I have still managed to avoid joining). On a lot of those sites the default privacy settings aren't very private and people can use third party programs to vaccuum up your profile and photos even if you think you're just limiting that info to "friends". As for porn, I think legitimate sites and billing processors realize if they trade too much info away, they'll end up facing fraud charges and that they'll lose their revenue streams. As more people get more comfortable sharing more about themselves on social networking sites, that is where more of the problems are going to occur.

Don't get me started on Facebook -- the very opposite end of the private spectrum of the Internet. I understand the web is not really as private as we would all like to think, but Facebook's default "privacy" settings are a joke; they try to link and/or make public as much information as possible depending on how much you put up on your profile page. It's network is so social it would make Stalin smile.

I understand people use it to connect and make or find friends, but I doubt they want to publicly share as much information as Facebook would like them to. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I get the regular spam that everyone else seems to get.
So far, the spam does not contain my name, just my email address.
What is a little funny, though, is that some of the spam I get has, for the sender's email address, my email address.
That does not make a whole bunch of sense. Does the spammer think that I would not remember sending spam email to myself?

Maybe the spammer has some kind of address mirror feature, to hide their own address.

As for the yahoo disposable email feature, I've looked at it before and it seems good. You can keep sending from the disposable email address and colour code your replies. Seems pointless me using it now though, since I am already getting a load of spam. The only downside of the feature would be having to remember to use the disposable addresses if you needed to contact the sites they were used at.

About Facebook and the like, I don't trust them either. Its a bit unsafe regarding personal information, to leave a social diary of yourself for all the internet world to see. Some people will add almost any stranger as a friend, just to bump up their e-friends count. Employers are even nosing on their staff on these social network sites. Someone actually got fired from their job because of derogatory comments they made about the workplace on Facebook, which their employer read.

The company who recently bought out Facebook has CIA links. Big Brother is watching you, even from the internet.

At the moment most of my spam goes to my junk box, but I still got about 5 in my main box while I had about 43 in my junk box. I don't wan't to have to create multiple email addresses to prevent spamming. Long live the Brown Coats.

Using Thunderbird and Verizon service, I get maybe 3-5 junk email a day if that. The rest, if I have any, go to my junk folder which I can only view through a internet browser. A very few of those will have my full name. Most of mine are for prescriptions more then porn.

The only big problem I had, was after subscribing to Playboy Magazine, they sold my info. As just shortly later, I got snail mail spam from Adam & Eve DVD's and 3x now I've gotten crap for buy this amount of movies, you'll get x amount free from some company I've never heard of.
