Does any one else find it creepy

Does any one else find it creepy when a web-site has the girl holding a sign that names the city where you live and says "(that city) Rules!" I understand how a computer program can do this by reading your computer, but I find it unsettling. How much else is that site reading from my computer?

I did check and found the "Reviewer's Special" price easy to find. Maybe because their computer is busy reading mine.

Just a guess but I'd say they know the city the same way the dating sites can post ads for people in your area .. by IP. For example, when I visit it shows where my ISP is rather than the actual xcity where I'm at. BTW, I doubt seriously the info is actually recorded (for non-members) though IP's are (as a rule) in server logs.

kkman112 (0) It's not that creepy. Any tracking software can narrow down to whatever the closest city is to you. When you connect to your ISP for internet, it assigns you an IP address and most give you a hostname. An example hostname: someisp.miami.fl.730.304.23.234

Usually your ISP name (sometimes shortened along with a location and your IP address are given). Pretty much any advertising company can associate hostnames with locations. I think mostly through masking. E.G. Filter anywone with 'miami' and/or 'fl' as being in Miami, Florida.

P.S. I am not too sure what your post has to do with this site in particular. Many models have setups now where they hold up a blank piece of paper and anyones city name can be printed on it by the server.

kman112,

I knew someone as smart as you could explain it to me. It's reassuring that they're only approximating where I live, although if Kat Young did want to knock on my door.....

Thanks!!!!

Internet is not a good place for privacy but nothing to worry about. Use anonymous proxy and will tell you "China Rocks". It is just IP localization which information can be found in WHOIS database. Anyone can query that. What they find is your ISP address which IP belongs to. You should be getting worried when it will tell you 'Hi Jay G living at X street" ;)

troglodite (Suspended) I don't find it creepy necessarily, but I do find it kinda dishonest at times. Some sites use that little trick to make you think the model on the site lives nearby in hopes that you'll be all "omg I have to join now....she could be just down the street!" Check out www.ashleyfine.com for an example. "I'm 21 years old and live in (your hometown here)". With tactics like that, it makes you wonder how honest they are being about the content in the members' area.

Totally on-point, Troglodite! I agree, it makes me have a negative feeling about a site.

Most sites that do this I see no problem with it, but "I'm 21 ... and live near X" is false advertising. I am pretty sure the owners of the site could be taken to court over that.
