There is no better comedian than the late great George Carlin. He was un PC before that became a thing.
Comedy should be dangerous and edgy and not just gross. I find most comedians just swear knowing they will get a cheap laugh out of it. They need to watch George Carlin or Richard Pryor and learn a few things.

Eddie Izzard is still one of my all-time favorites. Daniel Tosh is fantastic in stand-up, but not a big fan of his shows. Richard Pryor was outstanding. Robin Williams also had some fantastic sets.

Carlin really evolved from his lighter and later "hippy-dippy" stuff to the hard-edged thinking-man material he was doing in his later years. He managed to convey an intellectual and social consciousness without seeming the least bit maudlin about it. Bill Hicks also deserves recognition for this, though he died too young.
As Peter Ustinov said, "Comedy is just a funny way of being serious."
