Questionable practices? Does PU keep (and publish) a list of sites with whom we have had questionable (perhaps even fraudulent) events occur? Not a "blacklist" but more of a "buyer beware" list...as it were?

We don't have a list like that at this time though we can certainly consider it for the future. In the meantime, anything questionable or any such warnings will always be noted in the site facts for each site. We also encourage users to check for Reviews and/or Comments made by their fellow PornUsers before joining any site. Perhaps then you can explain to us what a "capture authorization" charge is...which is what was received upon trying out one of your "full trial" subscriptions....and without any warning I might add.

Not really sure what you're referring to. As I'm sure you know, PornUsers/TBP NEVER has a charge for anything. So, when you say, ... "upon trying out one of your 'full trial' subscriptions", I must assume you mean a trial you were offered after following a link from our site. Since again, WE don't have trials. When I asked the other staffers if they could guess what you were referring to, one found a link that you *might* find helpful that mentioned "capture authorization". First off...none of this has anything to do with PU directly...it is only meant to make others aware that things like this exist. What happened was not only did the site in question charge me for the full trial period, but at the same time, charged me for the full month, and called it a "capture authorization"...and without explanation, saying that the month charge would be backed off at the conclusion of the trial period. Consequently, they ended up with NOTHING... backing off ALL charges.

I've not heard of that practice before. If you want to email us with some specifics, we'll do some digging to see if it's a standard practice that warrants a "warning" in the listing. Thx for the heads up that stuff like this exists. I've recommended in other parts of PU that you folks set up a "Warn List" of sites that use questionable practices as well as suggestions in how to deal with scam sites. An example is today's review of All Elite Pass that previously has been identified as using questionable practices where the writer describes a rather nasty experience. See also a comment in that same site that was made last week regarding a "sister" site. PU would provide a great service by adding a summary of sites that have been found to have used bad practices.

I think what is suggested is desireable, but there would be problems with it. It might make this site a sitting duck for libel or legal action. But I think there's a need for it. I joined a site recently, and not only were there pop-ups galore, I found I was given 'free' membership to 3 or 4 others sites, without approving it. These 'free membership lasted only a few days, after which I would be charged $39 per month. I had to slog through all the emails, and cancel my membership to all these sites. I think these kinds of practices need to be dealt with.

I agree. The liability issue is easily avoided simply by discrete choice of terms. For example, the list could be titled something besides a "Warn List" (say. "Sites with Exceptions to Standard Practices" and include both what "standard practices" are, followed by a list of "non-standard" practices coded for simplicity. The list need not include any deroigatory inferences but be more along the lines of the current warning message for limited access trials. Your example, the check box option, and so on, are facts and if PU were to describe them factually, they cannot be subject to any liability.

I don't think the people in charge of the site want to do that. They are in business and from what they say it is not good business to make any sort of list. Instead they say to keep looking at the reviews and find out that way. A list is something I wanted to see, and so did a few others, but we are just people who post. Some of the other posters did not want to see a list of any sort and have said the same thing the moderators have said - no list, just reading the reviews should be enough. I have already stated the obvious reasons for having a list. It makes it easy for everyone to find all the shady, dishonest and dishonourable sites in one place. This is great for us as customers, but not so good for TBP. The reality is, it is much more likely to cost the bad sites money when you can find a list of all the bad ones, because people don't have to look around to find them. This especially applies to people new to TBP and PU. It makes it much easier for them to get tipped off quickly and easily. But I think the attitude of TBP and PU is that their sites are business concerns not charities. They will only go so far, and making a list is not something they are willing to go with, no matter how it is worded. Edited on Jan 01, 2009, 11:07am

I see that TBP now posts a warning when a website has the "opt out" boxes on the credit card authorization page, which is a good thing and addresses one of my beefs. And a similar post that advises that a site has become inactive would be really good.
