DOWNLOAD SPACE

We had a thread awhile back about hard drive space reserved for our favorites, and some folks had drive space up in the hundreds of G's and adding more. I had the grand total of 13 from a 10 yr old pc.
So.....bought me a new 120G external, and everything is great except after playing back about 2 minutes worth, it shuts off the vid, and after showing me the standard "Cannot support file. Player might not support file type or codec that was used to compress file", it continues to advise me:
"Windows can perform same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file: (They are all .wmv by the way).
"What do you want to do? Choose one:
>Play using Windows Media Player? (which is what it was playing on to begin with)
>Open folder to new files using Explorer?
>Take no action?
Well...it doesnt matter what I choose, none of them work. The new drive appears in My Computer, so it knows its there. Anybody face this before?

I'll leave the solution to someone who knows what he's talking about (I clearly don't).

But I've found there are a few physical issues with my hard drives. One is the RPM's. A 4200 RPM hard drive is far slower (and less expensive) than a 7200 RPM drive so that, alone, could be an issue. Also, if you are using a USB connection you could have defaulted to an old 1.1 rather than a 2.0 USB connection.

The test: Copy a poor playing video to your computer's hard drive an see if it plays properly from your internal hard drive. If it does it could be a slow performing hard drive, a malfuntioning hard drive, or some other physical issue that's causing the problem. If it has the same problem playing from your internal hard drive it could be that the download was screwed up somehow or that the video became partially corrupted and your hard drive is not the culprit.

I'm kind of a try it until I get it to work type with computers. One thing I do know that was told to me a few years ago was to convert the external HD to NTFS. Externals out of the box are usually FAT32. Depending on which Windows you have, the job can be very easy, but it will clear the external drive. I recently had bought my second 500 GB external, and had forgotten to convert it. So, I just moved everything from it back to my computer hard drive and then converted the external to NTFS.

I didn't have the problem you have though. The only problem I had was that the transfer speed from the main hard drive to the external was much slower that to my other external, which was converted to NTFS.

Depending on which version of Windows you have, XP and Vista are very easy to make this conversion, not for sure about the previous versions before XP though. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

A very true observation - I recently bought a 500GB External and was shocked to see that it was in FAT32. I was planning on reformatting it anyway - just to make sure the drive was working - but NTFS is so much superior to FAT32 that you'd have to be crazy not to use it if you've got Windows XP or higher. This never, ever occurred to me but it makes perfect sense. I'm gonna take some time and switch all my HD's to NTSF.
Thanks, guys.

You should see not only a speed increase, but a stability increase as well - I've had a lot less file degradation with NTFS. Best of luck! Formatting drives is always such a time consuming process :-P "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Under the assumption that you are using Windows XP - it is quite easy. Obviously the drive needs to be connected and responding to the computer, but the next step is to pop over to the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel.

That'll pop up a new batch of icons. The one you want is called Computer Management. Computer Management is its own little program with an old file explorer style layout. The organizational tree on the left as three main categories, you want Storage. That branch expands to a further three items - and the one you want is Disk Management.

Disk Management will take a sec to load. The top half will list all active disks (including attached externals) with information about the file systems, capacity, et cetera. The bottom half will show the comparative sizes of the drives, including all attached external drives. You can then just right click on bar graph for that disk and tell it to reformat.

Good Luck! "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I'm pretty sure this part of the message is a basic XP query when it determines a newly detected USB device is an external drive. Generally, I tell it XP to "take no action" when it detects the external drive because it's used for various file types.

Not sure how that's interfering with the vid you're trying to play *unless* the auto-detect is taking a minute to kick in.

Oh yeah, I also agree on the reformatting of the drive. I believe it's one of the readme files that comes with the drives that explains the shortcomings of having a LARGE drive using FAT32 Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Good call - I had forgotten about the auto play feature. I actually have had that deny access to the drive if it went ignored - frustrated the hell out of me until I figured out the problem. Oddly I've only run across the problem when uploading photos from my DSLR. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

EVERYBODY nailed it!! The path all the responses took is exactley what was happening. My pc finally told me it was looking for a Hi-Speed USB port connection, and showed me there were 6 on the tower. What I had done was connect the external to the USB slot on the "front" of the pc (convenient right?) So, I simply unplugged and replugged in the back, and whaalaa! Away we go!
Anyway, what a great forum this is.....thanks everybody! We'll call this "hard drive 101".
