And another question! I have an LCD TV with a USB port that allows me to listen to mp3 files and to watch family pictures when I use a memory stick. Strange thing though, last night I attempted for the first time to watch some High Resolution jpegs I had downloaded from a porn site, yet not a single one worked. Yet the family pictures, all in jpeg as well work just fine. Anyone know the reason why the same format (jpg) works beautifully when it originates with our camera, but doesn't when it is from a pay site?

There is more than one JPG format. Most of the digital camera's I own suffer from a similar problem. They can read their own photos off memory cards but when you swap cards between cameras they can't always view each other's photos. My Olympus camera can view photos created on a Sony camera but won't acknowledge the existence of photos from Samsung camera. Also if you put the card in a PC and modify the photos (ie rotate it and store back on the card), they often won't view on the camera afterwards. I often burn family and holiday snaps to DVD to show to relatives. This usually works but recently I found that photos taken on my daughter's new camera just show as a broken image on the DVD player unless I resize/rotate them on the PC first. My PC however appears to have no problems with any JPG files from any source. My printer seems happy to read any JPG files in it's cardslots too. I'm assuming it down to different levels of licence with the different variations on JPG compression? Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Possibly it doesn't like images over a certain size... although if camera is recent, the pics are likely to be as large as those you download. My guess is that it's more likely to be either an issue with the naming or location of the files. Cameras put their pics in certain named folders on the card (eg Sony is in /DCIM); and perhaps the TV looks in those folders. Try setting up a folder with the same name as the camera uses and put the pics in there?

Thanks ED, I never knew there were different kinds of JPG formats. Maybe if I try JPGs from another site, those might work.

I don't think the size would be a problem because many of my family pictures are huge. As to setting up a folder with the same name as the camera uses, the files I was trying to view all came zipped from the site. I unzipped them and created a folder called WebPics on my memory stick and put them under that. The folder opened as it should but every JPG file wore a little x on the bottom and refused to display. As I told Ed, I'll try another site's pictures next just to see if it is a question of wrong format of JPG. Thanks loads for the reply.

I had no idea that there could be different kinds of jpgs until, years ago, I joined Give Me Pink and I had a devil of a time trying to get my computer (not the current one) to display theirs. Outside of different levels of compression and the occasional use of the alternative "jpeg" extension, I don't know why or how jpgs can be different from each other, but it's bad practice in the industry to be putting out things that are nominally the same FORMAT and yet are not cross-compatible. Anyone remember when cross-compatibility was a buzz-word? The issue has largely died (things now being a lot more "C-C" than they used to be), but this is one of the few sore exceptions. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Most current formats are constantly being added to and developed, otherwise things would never improve. Sometimes older equipment or software which has not been updates fails to work with newer files. Also hardware manufacturers often only license a subset of the format, picking to cover the most common types. When they are selling large numbers of a product this can save them a LOT of money. Digital cameras are usually only support a particular format. That's all the camera needs to save the photos. DVD players etc. will vary by manufacturer, depending on how much they spent on drivers and how up-to-date they are. When you think about it, it's pretty impressive that they maintain any level of compatibility at all! Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Just a little post script, guys. I tried JPGs from various sites and they all displayed fine on my TV, except for those that originated with ATK Natural and Hairy!
