Spammed Has anybody had their computer spammed by adds. I got pop-up windows on every site I visited wanting to sell me just about everything. It got to the point I could not clear them off fast enough to use the website I was in. I finally contacted my anti-virus support and they cleaned a lot of programs I didn't even know I had. Even removed a browser that I had know idea how I got it. The tech actually was quit aware of my problem, so it must be common in the internet. The tech, also must have switched on a defense against this, because I am getting messages telling me a program wants to be uploaded and do I want it to continue. I thought I got this spam from a notorious porn site, but this message comes up from the most innocent of sites you can visit on the internet. Maybe I got a program that screams,"We got good one." It's possible that your computer has become infected with some malware. As they're not technically a virus, many anti-virus programs don't control them. But they can be a real pain and cause lots of problems with your computer. My wife's new computer got infected a few weeks ago ... it wasn't pretty. We had good results with the following programs: - AdwCleaner - Malwarebytes - HitmanPro (run in that order) bleepingcomputer.com has a lot of helpful info on the subject. BTW, you can get infected by malware in many different ways so. Probably the most common is as an add-on when you install some other program. Many install with helpful sounding names to trick you into installing them. I can't stress enough to NEVER go with an express install. A custom install will generally give you the option of not installing add-ons. This will go a long way in avoiding malware. Since the tech from my anti-virus support cleaned my system I have had no problems. Also, I since then I have gotten a couple of notices that a program wants to upload. I just say no. I suspect the tech must have turned some security on that I didn't have switched on before. It certainly was a pain. Windows opening up a blocking the view of the website I want to visit and trying to close them before other open up. At first it was just a couple and then it escalated. The pop-ups had a tab that would say I could uninstall the program, but it lead to some software I would have to upload to uninstall it. That's all I needed was another unknown program deal with. So far all is well again. As the years go by it seems there are people out there who find more ways to mess with our enjoyment of the internet. I wish the government would pass laws that had strict punishments for these attacks, but I haven't heard anything being done about it. Warning Will Robinson

Well, biker .....being the victim myself of the kind of problems you've just inquired about, seems I too will benefit from our omnipotent leader's sage advice .... in that I've grown to become a blue-ribbon sucker falling for their schemes. I recently done a thread on and about my situation with but a few of the legions of damaging, viral infiltrations out there --- which, not unlike the doings of armies of hungry Venus-fly-traps --- positioning themselves in very strategic locations all over the net. You see those traps, that beckons magically to one or more of your software needs ........And, by-golly its free! Of course, after they've bated you on their testing that finds you have two zillion seriously embedded home-wreckers lurking about within this particular program .....FREE THEN GOES TO THE BACK-BURNER. Because they have cannons, loaded and ready wherewith to open-up, thereby ridding you of the pesky vermin. AND, BECAUSE ITS YOUR LUCKY DAY; ...AT NOW PREVAILING HALF-PRICE, IT'LL ONLY COST YOU $29.95. You're now in the sucker's donuts hole! The creatively new ways of messing with your mind is endless! So, biker .....what specifically our fearless leader didn't dwell on in his usual adroit manner ...... BEWARE!

Every now and then I have to fix my fathers computer because of stuff like this. It's not always caused by a virus, though. These days you have to be careful when installing software, especially "freeware". The programs come with all kinds of additional crap and if you don't read carefully and uncheck all the boxes, you'll have that junk on your system. Sometimes browser add ons are the culprit. For chrome there is one called "search all" or something like that. It has superfish enabled by default in the settings. And superfish is like the most annoying thing ever. Every time you open a website, you get pop ups trying to sell you "related products".
