From what you quoted, "may" is an important word. Just because porn is shown to affect sexual attitudes of what is considered "normal" behavior doesn't clearly link it to an increase in infidelity. Porn shows people having sex. The way people in porn have sex might change attitudes in some people I suppose (maybe there will be more BJ's!), but bascially it's sex. It doesn't show infidelity, because these folks are fucking for a buck. The only time I saw infidelity even portrayed in porn was a flick back in the '80's with this girl who got mad at her cheating boyfriend and had sex with a guy just to get some kind of weird emotional revenge. But infidelity itself is not so easily defined. How can it be infidelity if the couple agrees to have an "open" relationship or to "swing"? And does it involve only married people or people who are going "steady" (as in the example above). And then there's another possibility: The more people cheat, the less time they spend on porn, 'cause they might feel they don't even need it. This I can't prove, but it's something to consider. So it's interesting that porn got pulled in as some possible causal factor in that article, but just like violence in movies or tv shows, it doesn't necessarily influence people to be violent. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

The study is flawed since the researchers states that some of the people lied about their answers, so how can you then come up with actual numbers for the study. I'm willing to agree that porn can be a factor, but so could the fact that your significant other is hooked on World of Warcraft. Long live the Brown Coats.

Ya know ppl, This always gets to me, if you are watching porn and the alternative is to nail your neighbor, um I think that that study should include that LOL. In my twisted mind I think porn helps fedelity more then hurts. If a person is not getting what they need from a spouse, would you rather wait until they get enough balls to go after another person, or spank the monkey and get on with life? Now porn stars well thats a different issue altogther as they are naiing the nieghbor LOL Since 2007

I couldn't agree more. I'd rather a guy surf the net and jacks off to a fantasy, then decide to nail one of his co-workers. Long live the Brown Coats.

Oh, yeah! Would the New York Times cite that? Or would the "received wisdom" take too much of a hit? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I'm not involved in a relationship; however the availability of porn on the internet definitely makes me less likely to be interested in a relationship. My mother is a chathost on ifriends.net and I regularly visit her room on ifriends.net--believe it or not I consider that to be perfectly 'normal' behavior. It definitely makes it less necessary to be involved in a relationship.

Next poll should be, what are the chances of a Psychologist from California agreeing with anything in the New York Post? For one, the word infidelity itself is not completely clear. I've had female friends and patients that would be more upset if their husband bought another woman a present, than if they slept with another woman. Probably could say that better by saying they would be more upset if their husband showed another woman love. Since most "cheating" sex is a show of lust or lack thereof lust from the wife. At one time, when I was doing more marriage counseling than now, I would recommend porn to couples that had a cheating spouse, because the porn would give the cheating spouse their need for more lust. I would say the success rate was 70%. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

Porn seems to be one of those niches in popular culture that is always going to get a bad rap. As some of you have mentioned already the reference to porn in the article isn't backed up by any numbers. They probably just needed a short paragraph on it because they wanted to bring in all the possible sexual Boogie men. I agree with Drooler that most porn these days rarely infers infidelity. The storyline in porn has disappeared with the rise of Internet porn so all you're seeing literally is attractive people screwing. You can imagine they are sleeping around on their husband/wife sure, but you can just as easily think of them as single or a committed couple.
