Recurring And Non-recurring! I never noticed this before but there are sites that quote the subscription price as being: One month, $29.95 recurring, $35.95 non-recurring. My experience has been that I can join at the recurring rate and cancel in less than a month without penalty IF the billing company is ccbill, as it is for many sites. In such numerous cases, the non-recurring rate is -- how shall I put this? -- "BS." It's not always so, though. ALS Scan and ALS Angels, for example, really do mean it. I found that out the hard way. Thanks, Drooler, I never paid attention to (or noticed) the two differing rates. Seeing that I'm mostly using CCBill and Epoch anyway I'll probably be all right then if I pick non-recurring. At least I hope so, in the case of Epoch! | |

I think they should drop the recuring/non-recuring idea and simply offer a price for one month membership and once you are a member then offer the possibility of a recuring membership at a a lower price for subsequent months. That makes alot more sense because who's going to be willing to sign for a re-curing membership before he's actually enjoyed the site? Long live the Brown Coats. | |

I'd always thought the extra cost to join with a non-recurring membership was just for people who don't want to have to worry about remembering to cancel. That, or maybe there's some thought to minimizing email contacts to try to hide a sign-up from a "potentially concerned third party" like the wife or the boss. (In some cases, I guess they could be one and the same.) Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. | |

I think that's a rationale for it, but it's a higher price to pay for a little piece of mind. I'm sure the irony of that is not lost on any of us. Of course it makes the user wonder if there will be automatic rebilling if the recurring option is chosen. This is not usually spelled out in a way that is crystal clear. This lack of clarity might lead some to overcharge themselves. Suffice it to say that whether rebilling is recurring or not, the user should make a record of that and/or keep the emails, etc. Recurring billing can even happen with year-long memberships, such as to Penthouse and even MetArt. Here's a little trouble upfront that helps a great deal over time: Bookmark a site so that it reads, for example, "MetArt RECURS Jan. 5, 2010." That way, you'll have your reminder right where you need it with practically no digging through files to find it. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. | |

Totally agree. I copy and paste my billing information to a Word document that I put in the same file as all the porn from that site, and then label the whole file with the sign-up date, for example "Kink.com Public Disgrace 7/22/09" Jay G | |

RagingBuddhist certainly got a point here. There's no reason to pay extra to get a non-recurring membership. Those billing companies HAS to deliever the product where it's NO hassle to cancel. It's very rare that problems come up here - and IF they do - you got every right - and if there's still problems: Well - that's what PU (TBP) is here for - to give those dealers a hard time... And BTW: I think it's so damn importend at the moment, that PUs stand up/united against all those money-hungry billing companies who try to make a fast dollar: PUs do not take any bullshit! I believe they have a non-recurring option at a higher price knowing people would choose the option of the "lower price" recurring in the hope that they will like the site so much they'll think "why not another month"? What bugs me are the trials. You sign up for 3 days and then it renews for $10 higher than the normal price. I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation for this practice. | |

Even the definition of the "trial" runs about rather freely on the semantic range. Eva's Garden has a non-recurring 365-day option ($126.87), but also a $114.97 365-day "trial." It's like: "Tell you what. I'll take the 1-year trial and, if I find that I don't like the site after all, I'll cancel it within 360 days, y'know, just to play it safe." ;) I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. There is a very good reason why they do it. Lets say you take a 3 day trial at 7$ but forget to cancel within those 3. You are then the owner of a membership that cost you 17$ more than if you'd paid the full membership upfront. I speak from experience because I did that a couple of times in the past. Needless to say I do no forget to cancel my trial mebership anymore. It's not illegal but I don't necessarily consider this good business pratice. They would be better off simply offering a trial that if not cancelled on time becomes a normal membership at the regular price and good for 30 days of when the new price came into effect.
