Why can't I log in?

I thought I'd throw this out to the members rather than ask Khan because it's probably a browser problem but Firefox and Internet Explorer let me in with my usual user name and password but Sea Monkey won't. I just installed it to try it out but can't get into PU.

Forget the above. Sea Monkey seems to be a bit quirky. When I try to sign in all I get is "Welcome guest," no: "you are logged in as messmer." However, the moment I start moving around in the site the top shows that I'm logged in.

Thanks, Khan. And, yes, my problem has been resolved, permanently, because I uninstalled Sea-Monkey. It was my compulsive need to try the unfamiliar that made me install it in the first place. It was okay but Firefox has done me no wrong, so I've returned to it! :-)

Hey messmer,

I downloaded Sea Monkey and tried to recreate this problem you were mentioning. It seemed to work fine for my, logged in right the first time without having to refresh to another page.

Does anyone else have Sea Monkey and can confirm this problem?

I'm not familiar with Sea Monkey, but I wanted to point out on a positive note that Google Chrome Beta works fine with this site. :-) "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Thanks for bringing that up! I've yet to try Chrome due to the apparent initial security issues.

Thanks for trying, Kevin. I re-inserted my usual password and user name three times, just in case I had made a mistake, and Sea-Monkey still wouldn't log in properly. I'm going to blame everything on Vista again. Can't go wrong there! :-)

That's another one I installed yesterday. Yep, as I said, I love trying out new stuff, especially if it's free. But I uninstalled it immediately after I found out that I couldn't use a master password, or eliminate all traces of my web activities when leaving the browser, yet keep my passwords (which are encrypted and protected in Firefox).

It's the same reason I don't use Internet Explorer, no matter how often they improve it. Until they come out with private browsing that leaves my passwords alone (and encrypted) I'm not using it. I realize there are plug-ins, I just like the feeling I get from Firefox that when I close the browser the history is wiped out, the cookies are destroyed, and by using a master password I can protect stuff that I'd rather keep private.

I'm pretty sure the "Incognito Browsing" feature on Google Chrome will achieve that function for you. I just like how fast and cleanly designed the browser is. It loads pages considerably faster than Firefox.

As for password encryption - I don't know how encrypted Firefox is on that - Chrome pulled the passwords direct from Firefox without even asking directly (it said something like, Get settings from Firefox?). It is partly based off of Mozilla's code as well as other open source code, so that might be why. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

To me, it looked too clean, Toadsith. :-) When they asked me why I was uninstalling I mentioned the lack of a menu bar as one of the reasons, the other was the lack of a master password. Another reason was the inability to tweak things to meet one's own tastes, e.g. I don't like underlined links but found no way to adjust that. As to the transfer of passwords from Firefox, I think that they transferred the urls of the password using sites but not the passwords themselves. Maybe it's because I am using a Master Password in Firefox.

I love the clean look myself - I've never seen the need for the menu bar to keep taking up space since I only use it once a month at most. Granted tweaking the browser is limited at this stage, but as it gets more popular, I'm guessing that will become easier. I don't use a master password in Firefox, so that is probably why I didn't run into any problems when Chrome grabbed the passwords. I do find it runs considerably faster than Firefox - even counting that I tuned Firefox up for speed. Plus, I love the way it handles the tabbed browsing - it is very slick. Hopefully they will add a master password option for people like you with security concerns, and the cache / history cleaning on close option too. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I had a problem with Sea Monkey on here as well, about 2 months ago, it would sign me in, but it would leave off the sidebar on the right of the site that has "Home Page", "Browse Sites" and the others, it was completely gone. It didn't hit me at first, until I started to look for a site. I tried just now with Sea Monkey, and everything is fine, if someone mentioned this, look over it, could it be the build of Sea Monkey? Every time I open it, there is a new build available. I hadn't been using it much lately.

I have downloaded Chrome, but only tried it a few times yesterday, I like what I see of it so far. And the other, I really like Flock, it is a variation of Firefox, and so far, I have had no problems at all from it. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

Hey, exotics4me, I'm a collector of free software as well. :-) I must go and try your "Flock," thanks for the tip.
