Veteran's Day In the US today, it's a legal holiday ... Veteran's Day. Technically yesterday was Veteran's day but today is the day it's observered this year. In a few other countries, it's called Armistice Day or just Remembrance Day. Whatever you call it, it is a day set aside to remember and honor those who have served in the military. On this day, I'd like to offer thoughts and prayers to those who have served and those who are currently in the military. A special "prayer" to all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. In addition, I want to offer thoughts and prayers to the leaders that send these brave men and women into harms way. May your decisions always be just and honorable. May you never think that war, in any of its guises, is just a power game to aid your personal agendas. For those that do the dirty "work" of war, it is a deadly serious business. Do not make light of their commitment and willingness to fight your battles, even if they don't always agree with your reasons. They deserve more. Blessing to all Vets, past and present. I'm glad the military is getting more and more progressive and the men and women of the military don't have to live a lie as frequently. I also hope they are in less and less armed conflicts; but when they are, I hope they all come home safely. The below is shown strictly for reference. I misread Khan's initial post as saying that Monday (the 12th) was Veterans Day and added this note in my post in response. Whoops, I'm the idiot.

Very well put, Khan. Here in Canada it is Remembrance Day and is still remembered with gratitude to those who served under dreadful conditions and especially for those who gave their lives. I am personally deeply grateful for those who served in a just war, like WWII, to fight against Hitler and the Japanese Empire. Even though I was born on the other side of this conflict, and lost my father and many relatives to it, I am still giving thanks to the Allied Forces for getting rid of a horrendous, evil tyrant. I am certain that with my big mouth I would have been one of Hitler's victims sooner or later because it just is not in me to submit quietly. To this day, probably caused by the repression in my youth, I tend to overreact every time I feel that someone is trying to control me or my thoughts. No one should live in constant fear of saying or doing something that is considered threatening to the State. Therefore, I am deeply thankful that both my country of birth, as well as my adopted country, are free, thanks to the sacrifices of those brave people who made this possible.

I joined the Canadian Forces in 1986 and I still remember a lecture during basic training wherein we were told that Military Police often patrolled gay bars and crusiing areas looking for military personnel. Back then they would be easier to spot since short hair wasn't common on men. The warning was that gays and lesbians would be discovered and kicked out as the degenerate perverts they were. In the intervening years things have changed almost completely. Gays and lesbians are welcome in the military and there are even gay married couples who serve. In the unit I'm currently in there are a number of lesbians but I can't say if there are any gay men or not. Certainly there are no 'out' men, but I suspect that if a gay man was in this unit he would have no concerns about being open about it. (Besides, sex, generally, is a topic frowned on in the messes... Although I do recall a conversation in the mess with an attractive, young female Naval officer on the suject of porn. I was impressed by her grasp of the subject and ability to name names. I played dumb, of course. Jenna Haze? Who's that?) I recall a conversation a few years back with my then Commanding Officer and we were both pretty proud of how well the Forces adapted to modern thinking. Morale didn't decline, force effectiveness was not undermined, discipline wasn't undercut. People just went on being people. Besides, a military force that doesn't reflect the value of the citizenry they serve won't be held in the same esteem. I'm glad to see the U.S. changing this position and it will only expand as the American people embrace their gay and lesbian neighbours.

Not in my day, young 'un. When I joined the Navy in 1958 all we talked about in the messes was sex!

Once again, Canada is ahead of the U.S. on social issues. As an American, I sort of wish that weren't always the case, but it makes you guys a good neighbor to have. Now if we just legalized drugs, we'd be able to relieve Mexico of much of its troubles and we could stop having a stupid wall on our southern border. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Thanks, Khan, for bringing us this important thread. Having served with the 508th Airborne during the early '50's, (on a memory-etched occasion) being prepared for, but through perhaps Devinne intervention, I was pulled from a combat jump at the last minute that my division made on the other side of the Atlantic, amid heavy artillery and small gunfire, costing the lives of many to whom I'd grown close and trained with ... this reminder adds special significance to extolling them the highest honor possible -- and to all who've followed.

These have been some kind and thoughtful comments on this thread...I just wish more Americans would remember them the other 364 days of the year. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Just curious, graymane, did you mean the Pacific? I only remember one war in the early fifties and that was in Korea. But then I am getting forgetful and maybe there was an armed conflict somewhere in Southern Europe?? Not trying to be annoying just can't remember combat in Europe at that time.

Thanks, my good friend, for correcting me on this very obvious temporary lapse of memory -- it was indeed the Pacific and the drop was in South Korea. ( Combination of seeing too many German-war movies ... along with another cheap shot from the onset of age-related Dementia.) In order to dissuade those who might think I'm makin' this up, let me add a little detail: The 187th lead this airborne operations, with which Our division was joined by the 101st Airborne Division in making this one of the largest airborne man-and-equipment drops recorded on Koren soil. I can't take any credit for our costly victory there, between my two years serving (1953 - 1955) because, as I said, I was withdrawn because the numbers needed was meet before they got to us. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm retreating to the blackboard whereon I shall write "Pacific, not the Atlantic" 500 times. After which, I'll be looking for a general course in Geography.
