TV question!

If I downloaded one of my videos into a flash drive and plugged it into the USB port of my flatscreen TV would any of the current formats (mp4, wmv, avi, mpg) play on it? Thanks.

It probably depends. I was talking with a guy with one brand of TV and he can plug a flash drive in and play just about anything. I rushed home and tried it with my LG brand. It turns out that LG only supports photos and music - no video. At least not three years ago when I bought the TV.

Let us know how you make out.

I too have an LG and when I plugged in my thumb drive it worked - The LG is less than a year old.

But I have not tried to plug in my 2T drive. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

As has been said, it depends on your TV. MP4 is the file type that is most likely to work, followed by mpg and wmv. Avi files are probably not gonna work, but it's possible possible. If you can find the manual to your TV somewhere, it should be able to tell you the file types that work.

To you, rearadmiral, and to all those who so kindly responded:

You are right on. I transferred four different files to the flash drive, with formats mpg, avi, wmv, mp4, just to see if any of them might work, plugged it into my TV and got the message "empty folder" and an icon "photos and music." And, yes, it is a two year old LG.

If you have a blu-ray player with a USB port, sometimes those will play video. Again, as with all these, YMMV. (Is that acronym falling out of favor? I haven't seen it in a while.) "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

If your TV won't play them, there are loads of cheap media player boxes out there that will sit between the HDD and the TV and play the videos for you. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

To complicate things it may be the filesystem of the drive instead of the format of the videos. If it is empty you may want to try and format it to FAT32 and try again. Or if it already was FAT32 then try NTFS. Just plug it in to your PC, open "My Computer", right click on the drive and choose "Format". The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Thanks, I'll give it a try, BMF. The drive is empty at the moment so no harm if I format.

I actually hunted on Google for a while before I realized that BMF stood for BadMrFrosty... (Blowing Money Fast didn't seem to apply; nor did "Black Mafia Family".) "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I was reminded of Big Mouth Full, a site at Bang Bros? Reality Kings? Brazzers? but was too lazy at the time to spell out BadMrFrosty!
