An Excellent Alternative to Windows Media Player

The new, just released, version (ver. 9.4) of the VLC alternative to WMP from VideoLan offers a neat snapshot feature that is instantaneous so anyone can make photos from a video that are as good in quality as the video itself.

VLC is free at VideoLAN. It's got some great features like the snapshots, a fast aspect ratio correction, and a better operating console. I use Mozilla Firefox and it works just fine.

The one negative is that, unlike WMP, you cannot adjust color and/or contrast.

I found this alternative in a post on this forum a few months ago so I installed it and have had no trouble at all with pop-ups or email spam. But the new version has added the easy snapshot feature, which is great and motivated me to post a recommendation on this forum. (The old version had a snapshot feature, but it was rather slow and clumsy to use.)

Click the "Extended Settings" Button, it looks like an audio equalizer, that will open the Extended Settings Window. On that window select the "Video Effects" tab and you will find all of the basic color, saturation, contrast, gamma, et cetera settings in the "Basic" section. It will also do some really crazy stuff, like split up the video into multiple chunks for a panel of monitors on the wall, overlay logos, or change the image geometry - all in real time. VLC is probably the best media player around (free or to buy)and this is totally free.
It's dammed easy to use, always reliable and much faster to start up with than WMP...
And yes, it's possible to ajust video-effects.

BUT one thing though, Toadsith: I have not been able to locate any "file-assosiation" after installing - any idea? "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

In the File Menu, under "Tools" click "Preferences..." (or just press CTRL+P).

This will open the ridiculously large preferences window, there select the "Interface Settings" section: The top icon, it looks like a green cone underneath a orange skin that's peeling off. On that page of settings, you'll see a border around a group of settings that is labeled "Instances" - and there should be a button within that group that says "Association Setup".

Pressing that will open up a giant list of file types with check boxes next to them. Simply check (or uncheck) the ones you want hit "Apply" and you should be done :-) "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Perfect. Last challenge solved. And the various effects are fun to play with. The "cartoon" effect on a porn video creates some very interesting snapshots.

Thanks again Toadsith. You are clearly the "go to" guy on PU.

Glad to have been of assistance :-) In truth, you just happened to have posted this at a good time as I recently found the player through another site and had been playing with it quite a bit.

And that cartoon effect is awesome, I hadn't tried it on porn - it reminds me quite a bit of those rotoscoped movies like silly "Waking Life". Of course, the effect can't top Diesel's attempt at merging porn and cartoon:

Thanks Monahan, I got the player and love it! One problem though, I associated all formats with my new player but Windows Media Player is hesitant in giving up .mpg and wmv. files. Where on the WMP do I find "associations" so that I can uncheck the two formats. I looked high and low but can't find them. By the way, I realize that I can play the files with the new player by right-clicking and then choosing it but don't want to go through the constant bother. I also saw some replies referring to watching a movie in cartoon effect. How do I do that? Sounds interesting! :-)

Traditionally with Windows Media Player, you need to find the File menu (if it is hidden) and then, under "Tools", select "Options...". That will open the Options window which is tabulated, and one of the Tabs should say "File Types" (or perhaps "Associations"). The current computer I'm running is using Media Player 10, if this doesn't work, let me know and I'll check out how to do it on Media Player 11 on my other computer later. However, I'm pretty sure it is basically the same with all recent versions of the program. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Cartoon effect

If you are using version 0.9.2 or later (go to Help>About... to see the version you have), go to Tools>Extended Settings>Video Effects>Image modification

OR

Go to Tools and check Advanced Controls. That brings up a console that will have several icons, one of which is a simple looking equalizer control. Click on that icon and it has the same panel as the first option.

I haven't learned how to disable the WMP default either except to remove WMP altogether, which I'm not prepared to do. Perhaps someone else knows. Switching back and forth is a bother, I agree, but I can live with it.

[Edit] Toadsith posted a WMP reply while I was composing this reply. I will try that later today.

Off point...but if someone can create a VLC freebee with all of its features, why can't Bill Gates and his gang of rocket scientists do the same damned thing? I know. Because he doesn't really want to and doesn't have to.

Sigh. Edited on Oct 13, 2008, 01:04pm (Monahan: Later info just posted)

Thanks for the offer of help, Toadsith. I am using WMP 11 for Vista and under tools > option> there's nothing to be found that would point to file associations unless it is very well hidden. If you ever find a way on your other computer to un-couple me from WMP I will be deeply grateful. :-)

Since my home computer runs XP instead of (evil) Vista, I thought despite it being WMP 11, that it might still be different. So I found this page on File Associations in Vista, perhaps this will be of assistance :-)

Ask Leo!: Where did file associations go in Vista? "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Found it, thanks Monahan! As to disabling WMP default file associations, see my reply to toadsith.

And I know what you mean by hanging on to WMP because you never know what might happen if you try to get rid of realplayer, quicktime and wmp because some web sites demand them and won't accept any substitutes.

I thought I didn't need Quicktime any more, uninstalled it, and within an hour found a site that wouldn't let me stream a quicktime movie if I didn't have QT on my hard drive. So, it's back on! :-)

Okay.

Clicked snapshot and I have no idea where the snapshot was saved to. A URL popped up but was gone too fast for me to read it. Nothing shows up in my recent docs folder either. What good is a snapshot if it doesn't give you an option as to where it is saved? Also, some other players, such as Quicktime, allow screen caps: just press the print screen button on your keyboard and open it up in the paint program, crop, convert to jpeg.

One other problem. Had trouble closing the program. Stopped a random vid, looked for "X" button, but none in sight. Closed program by right clicking at bottom.

I also made this program my default program for all vid files. Must have missed something while installing.

No noticeable improvement to WMP as far as vid quality.

I have yet to see a video type that VLC can't handle, and this included "broken" videos.

It's too bad they made a lot of mistakes on the newer version. A lot of people are refusing to upgrade because of it. Regardless it's free and it works insanely well. If I were to review it I'd give it a 98%

You can decide which folder to use for the snapshots, www. Just click on tools, then preferences, then videos and you will find the choice near the bottom of the screen that pops up. It also gives you the option to save the snapshops in jpg rather than png.

An additional question. For some reason some of my widescreen videos from FTV play in the 4:3 format rather than 16:9. They are definitely HD and definitely widescreen and play that way in wmp. Where is the setting so that this new player will play a video as recorded? Or did I click the wrong button somewhere? :-)

If you right click on the video while it is playing, a menu should pull up and then you can mouse over "Video" and there should be a second menu with "Aspect Ratio" listed - then just select which ever aspect ratio you'd prefer :-)

(I'm typing this from memory, let me know if it seems wrong and I'll check the program directly, lol) "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Ah, Toadsith, whatever would I do without you gentlemen and this forum. Your advice worked like a charm. I looked in all the settings and could never find the aspect ratio. A right click, who would have thought! :-) Thanks.

Haha, glad it worked, the computer I was on at the time didn't have VLC installed so I wasn't 100% sure I was right :-P

Back when I used to teach computer basics to New York State Employees (like "how to use the mouse") I drilled a motto into their heads: "When in doubt, right click." Of course, if that was the first law of computer basics, the zeroth law was: "If it's broke, reboot." If only I could get my grandfather to learn the basics though, the man seems to believe the computer is capable of read his mind but is just being difficult and that is why buttons aren't magically changing their function for his needs. At least he seems to have figured out Netflix... "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I just got the latest version of the VLC Player (5.0.1) and can't find the settings for snapshots (or how to modify the defaults.) I previously had it set to save snapshots in jpg format and in a folder/directory different from the default one. Can someone who has the latest version help me find the right spot to make the changes. Probably staring me right in the face!

PS. Just came to mind: VLC stutters badly when I play the 8000 bitrate HD files I downloaded from In The Crack and FTV and I always have to switch to the Windows Media Player to play those files. I do have a quad core chip and more memory than I'll ever need. Any ideas? Solutions? Thanks again. Edited on Aug 06, 2009, 11:43am

Under "Tools" click "Preferences". The Preferences window will pop up with 6 large icons on the left side if you are in "Simple" settings. (Change modes in the lower left hand corner where it says "Show settings" - selections are "Simple" or "All".) Click on the "Video" icon, this will take you to the Video Settings. On that tab, you should see a section near the bottom outlined and labeled "Video snapshots". It will have a text box labeled "Directory" with a "Browse..." button next to it - click that and choose the directory to save the files into. The "Prefix" text box you can simply type in and this will be added to the front of the snapshot's filename, I usually stick with the default one. I recommend checking the "Sequential numbering" check box so you can take many snapshots per video without it overwriting them. You can change the format with the drop down box labeled "Format" - choices are just png or jpg.

As for this, there are a number of possible reasons, but I find for my computer it runs best if, in the "Video Settings" section labeled "Display" the following are selected:

* Skip frames
* Accelerated video output (Overlay)
* Window decorations
Output --> DirectX 3D video output

Uncheck this one:

o Use hardware YUV->RGB conversions "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Thanks, Toadsith! I had my settings on "all," once I clicked on "simple" I was able to follow your directions and all is now well. Thanks loads. As to your other recommendations re. stuttering HD videos, I followed your advice but the darn videos still stutter in the VLC Player, WMP works fine but I find VLC so much better that I hate to use WMP.

I like the snapshot feature (obviously) but, even more important, I like the idea that one can sharpen the videos. Most need it and I have VLC set to automatically make them "crisper" by a notch. Now why doesn't Microsoft think of incorporating that into their player?
