Cross sales

Been kind of low on inputs lately - but coming back one thing I noticed:

Quite a few of PUs have this cross sale problem - see the latest reviews and comments.

I follow you - first when you join, you have to fill out a lot of infos - so you might miss that little no-good deal where the site - not the billing co. - have this pre-crossed sales deal - and that's one thing you might miss - in the hurry to get at the site.

Generally it's shitty - to make those pre-crossed sales - because you get to pay something extra - BUT the worse is, that you do not find the easy way to cancel that particular site - pre-crossed.

BAN that! "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

I wish all the billing companies would outlaw that practise. It's misleading and dodgy. Sure offer savings by buying multiple site memberships together but there's no valid excuse for pre-ticked "options" which are clearly designed to deceive more money out of the customer.

I have never done that and never will. Apart from any moral standpoint on my part, it would damage the reputation of my sites.

Maybe it should be grounds for a site's review being no more than a one line warning? Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I totally agree. It's time sites like this are hit hard with a big deduction in marks. Yes, it should be illegal, but even if it isn't, PU and TBP should be highlighting this at every opportunity. I think maybe the owners of PU and YBP have underrated the feelings of porn users when it comes to this sort of dishonesty. Edited on Apr 07, 2010, 10:22am

No one like cross sales but I think they're here to stay. Since porn is basically on the edge of legitimacy in most people's minds and the internet is not terribly regulated I think most porn sites, even the big name ones, have adopted it as a normal business operating procedure simply because everyone else does it. They can get away with it because some sites are overseas and beyond the arm of the law, they deal in a purely web based commodity, some people don't want to complain to their bank/credit card because they'd be embarrassed, or some combination thereof.

If "normal" sites started doing this people would be up in arms and there would be laws passed against it right away: Amazon doesn't suddenly put a bunch of crap in your cart right before hitting the "buy" button and the clerk at the grocery store doesn't throw in a box of prunes when you're at the check out. It's basically theft for the unwary which society doesn't tolerate. So long as cross sales don't venture too far out of the porn world then we're stuck with them. However, I'm sure there is a sweet class action lawsuit waiting out there for some lawyer to generate some major fees from with the current practices. I'm not sure why no one has been sued over this already because it's the billing companies that have the deep pockets and they're the ones in cahoots with the websites in keeping this practice alive. This a problem that won't be solved any time soon by legislation, only by litigation.

We hate pre-checked xsales and highlight them on the site facts very clearly when sites have them. From what I knew, users were satisfed with how we handle that. The Best Porn - Ultimate Consumer Guide to Porn
