Non-Recurring By Default? How do you think a site would do if they switched to a one month non-recurring option as their default? Not at an increased price but at the same price as before. No more worries about canceling, or where to find that cancel button, or over getting an acknowledgment that your account did get canceled, no more worries about forgetting the deadline. Just one choice: one month, non-recurring. Period! Do you think that might attract more subscribers? Looking at a recent poll of ours, I think this idea might be quite attractive to many of us because most, if I interpret the answers correctly, like to subscribe for one month and then come back periodically to harvest the in-between updates that appeal to them rather than keep subscribing from month to month to month.

Our site does very well with non-recurring. After nine months of research and tracking our recurring vs non-recurring sales, I have found many of our members choose non-recurring but still return each month. They prefer the option rather than the recurring billing. We did offer recurring at a discounted price but I found 90% of those that chose this option, chose it for the discount and canceled at the end of their 30 days anyway so I just removed the recurring option. this removal has not hurt our sales.

I've joined a small handful of sites over the years that had 1-month-non-recurring-by-default subscriptions. My guess is that they didn't want the potential hassles of dealing with subscribers who might let their memberships run past that monthly line and try to recoup the losses. And in some cases, they were sites that no longer updated (): Ambra's Dreams (), Body in Mind, Czech-Angels, Domai, Rigin, Claude Christian, SuperNiceGirls, and Sweet Lilya () And then there was that DDF mid-summer special last year; sorry to digress. Messmer, you've got a great idea and I wish that more sites would embrace it. Yariana's analysis supports it, and that is reflective of my own pattern of join, quit, wait, lurk, check PU ... return. It would be a lot less hassle for everyone. And while I'm at it, I wish that sites would stop it with the bullshit premium price tags on non-recurring memberships when the user can just cancel the cheaper "recurring" membership in 29 days or fewer. Such was NEVER a recurring membership anyway. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Thanks, Drooler. It's my hope that webmasters look in on our forum and polls now and then because it is my firm belief that one month, non-recurring is a good idea and would be beneficial to site and subscriber alike.

I don't see how making a default of non-recurring would be less hassle for, or in any way benefit the site. They stand to make more money from people who forget to cancel before their month is up. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. Edited on Jun 27, 2010, 04:56pm

How many do you guess would do that, RB? I know I mentioned the worry about forgetting but I also always cancel very early into a subscription for that reason. I really believe that some folks would hesitate less when it comes to joining a site if they felt it was a one time transaction: pay your money and then forget about it! But I might be wrong, that's why I threw it out for discussion.

Yeah, I guess a few more people might sign up because of it. But I still think more people forget to cancel. I can only picture that that's why the recurring charge was created in the first place. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I agree with drooler, it's a very good idea; but don't hold your breath waiting for change. Recurring is a win-win for pay-sites in that the ratio of stay-ons weigh too heavily in their favor. They throw you a non-recurring bone or two BUT YOU GOTTA PAY EXTRA FOR IT --- The fact is they'd rather you be locked in. Note: They want your credit card info.; They want you to agree to their lousy legalize-laden agreements. This sums up the fact they have a grip on your balls and will squeeze as they see fit. I would join a hell'va lot more sites if they'd drop this "gottcha"

I'm all for the one-time non-recuring membership at the same price. I tend to believe that it's not likely to happen anytime soon but I'll be quite happy if and when it does. For now I'll keep doing what I've always done and keep track of my due date and cancel if the content doesn't warrant a longer membership. Long live the Brown Coats.

Over at Kissmegirl, they have non-recurring as the default, but also offer a recurring membership at the same price. That seems more sensible to me than removing the recurring option. That way, the customer doesn't feel like someone's trying to milk him, and also leaves him the option to be milked, if he really feels like supporting the site on a continuing basis.
