Technical question re portable drives and Windows 8

When you plug a portable harddrive into your computer it assigns a drive letter to it. My laptop has XP and if I have a drive that it labels “J” and I plug a second drive in XP will give it a different letter assignment. Not so with New Coke… umm, I mean Windows 8. If I plug in one of my newest WD drives it gets assigned a letter and if I then plug in a second one (identical in specs – WD 2TB) it gets assigned the same letter. I figured the fix would be easy by simply manually assigning a different letter to one of the drives, but New Coke fucks that up too by assigning the new drive letter to BOTH drives at the same time. I even tried unplugging one drive and renaming the remaining one and then plugging the second drive but that doesn’t work either because other WD drives get that new assignment too. What seems to be the issue is Windows 8 can’t or won’t see these as unique drives – it sees them as WD 2TB drives and assigns the same letter.

Anyone have any tips? The WD drives come with some folders and software already installed. If I removed that would the drive then be seen as unique?

Thanks

Interesting...I have yet to hear anything good about Windows 8. I was happy Windows 7 did solve some of the incompatibility issues I had with programs that wouldn't run on Vista and now will stay with Windows 7 until I hear some purpose to Windows 8.

Remember when people said, "If it's not broken don't fix it"? Jay G

Crap like this is exactly why I'm still on XP Pro - and pissed off they don't make any decent W2K Pro compatible motherboards anymore.

ra - If W8 follows the same protocol as any previous operating system, the name of the drive is inconsequential. I have several drives with the same name on XP. The only thing I can suggest is to go to the tech forums to see if anyone else has had the same problem or might have a solution for you. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I agree with RB XP-was the best. I made the switch on my main machine to Win7-64-Ultimate because I have a quad-core and video card that will not optimize in XP. My Motherboard has been upgraded a few times lucky the systems supports it.
I notice in Win7 even the directories act weird.

Now I may have a patch for you, see in Win7 my F drive the main porn movie drive annoyingly showed up as a DVD drive.
Its was a not a huge pain but was not what it should be.
I took my D- drive ( hardrive) and created subfolders and then assigned my F to a subfolder. By doing that it stopped seeing a DVD drive and now sees the drive as a subfolder is what allot of people do when they have many hardrives or want to hide them you just hide the folder assigned to it .
The directions are to long for the forum but use Bing and look for Assign drive to folder.

Yes I am supporting Bing I have been using Google along time Just do not like some of their control they are getting over the internet so now supporting Bing I get better porn results then Google, I use Bing or Dogpile. Since 2007

You almost agree with me (or something like that). I'm only using XP because I can't get a decent Windows 2000 motherboard anymore. I knew Vista was a joke from the start and have seen too many people complaining about W7 & 8 to even bother looking at 'em. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Thanks for the tips, gents.

Windows 8 isn't great but I have found work-arounds for a lot of what I do. The software has been so universally panned that I suspect MS will retreat on it ASAP.

LOL ok, Ya I would have gladly stayed on XP my quad system had it for awhile but its kinda like have a V8 and driving it only in parking lots. I agree 7 & 8 are buggy 8 more so.
I have several old mother boards but my guess you are far away from where I am. Win7Ultimate 64 allows me to tweak as I need so I do like 7 but not as much as XP.

My Favorites in this order where

98SE
Win2000
Windows XPpro-3

I wish I could get Unbunto to work on this machine but no drivers for allot of my stuff Since 2007

I've been using Win7 for a couple of years now and I have very little to complain about. I loved XP but that OS had too many security holes in it and I got tired of getting the latest virus/Trojan on my computer and having to format the drive because my tech guy was never able to properly remove all traces of them and they kept coming back.

I can't speak for WIN8 but I'm not the only person since it seems that WIN7 is still the more popular OS of the two by a pretty large margin. Long live the Brown Coats.

Thanks for asking CT. The answer is 'sort of.' I haven't tried the fix yet, but I think I know what it might be. The breakthrough came in properly identifying the problem. The issue is that in Windows 7 and 8 plugging in the same brands of drives will cause a "signature collision." Message boards propose two available fixes. One is to simply click a button on the disk management screen to get the OS to assign a different signature (which is different from the drive letter), and the other sounds slightly more complex than calculating a proper trajectory to leave earth's orbit and end up in the moon's orbit. I thought techies would be into porn too and would prefer simple solutions, but I guess not. The bottom line is I haven't tried to fix it because I have been warned to back up, which I'm usually good at, but these days I'm downsizing and won't back up until I'm done.

As soon as I try something though I'll report here because I can't imagine that I'll be the only PU member who has Windows 7 or 8 and wants to plug two same-brand drives in.

What really annoys me about this is why it's a problem. With XP I could plug in same-brand drives and they'd read with no problem. What on earth could be so unusual about plugging in two drives that MS didn't bother to include the capability they already had!

The weird thing is that it turned out to be a simple fix that cost nothing. Like I wrote to Cybertoad, finding the name for the problem was that hard part. (G.I. Joe was wrong when he said "... and knowing is half the battle.") Once I had the name of the problem the solution seemed easy. The remaining problem was that of the two possible solutions one was simply and would take less than a second and one was complex and would take hours. I was warned to back up first, but I plugged the drive in and found it in dick management, right clicked it and clicked "online." That worked. The OS assigned a new drive letter. What I can't figure out is why the OS isn't smart enough to have assigned a unique signature on its own.

Bottom line is the problem is solved. That to all for the advice.
