Percy Sledge dies at 73 Percy Sledge dies at age 73 of natural causes. Known for his hit song "When a Man Loves a Woman". I was never a big record or album buyer, but I heard this song, a lot, on the rock stations when it became a hit. Don't hear fifties and sixties much anymore. I've sort of made a name for myself in some local Karaoke bars near where I'm living .....and although my strong suit is Elvis impersonations, I'll belt-out some popular and Country hits from time to time when the sprit moves me. It might interest a broad segment of PU music-lovers, especially those sustaining a lovable reverence of that memorable era that spawned the likes and style of Percy Sledge. I'm doing my part keeping his memory alive and well by bringing down the house at karaoke bars singing "When a Man Loves a Woman". | |

I don't know what kind of life he had but I would think a man would be considered rich for having created such an iconic song. How many weddings would not exist if that song had never been created? Rest in Peace Percy. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

Bette Midler sang "When a Man Loves a Woman" in the movie The Rose -- the first I remember hearing that song. Since then, I've heard the Percy Sledge as well -- in movies and those TV ads for compilation albums. I recognize the song as a classic, in spite of Hollywood turning it into another of its clichés. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. | |
