Raffle Suggestions

I have been thinking a lot about how the raffle works and how to make it better.

1) If you want reviews of sites that have none, make them worth three points instead of two. If it is part of a network, it should not be a network review, but one that fully describes the value of that individual site.
Far too many reviews are useless as the network already has reviews.

I also think that a lot of new sites would be too small for us to normally pay for. Periodically raffle a free membership to generate publicity. I would expect that there are webmasters who would love that idea.

2) If you want more new faces to review sites, make newbie reviewers excellent level reviews worth three points also. This would apply to the first five reviews and would give them an advantage.

3) To avoid overly rewarding frequent reviewers, make the raffle once a month. In a normal four week period there would be 12 prizes right now. Give fewer, say six, and increase their value.

Maybe?

These suggestions all make sense to me.

I know during the Khan Era, there was a strong push by management against free memberships for the sake of user reviews. However, we all know that professional reviewers aren't footing the bill of trying out whatever they are reviewing but we expect them to be able to take price into a when creating a review. Maybe Porn Users can add a special tag for reviews that were created based off a free membership. Much like Amazon's Vine reviews.

The end of last year MikeC gave out some free year long memberships. The number of reviews that were generated was truly astonishing.

As long as a review is not tainted by a conflict of interest, such as a quid pro quo that a site be reviewed favorably, free memberships can help make PU better.

Khan always seemed to believe that a conflict of interest was inevitable and wouldn't hear anything of it. The fact that Mike C is more open to it is good to know, and it sounds like the experiment was fruitful.

I actually did I think 2 reviews that were from free memberships, but I kept it a closely guarded secret lest I awoke the wrath of Khan.

Again, as long as there was 100% transparency about the review being from a free membership, like Amazon Vine, I'd be totally OK with this becoming a moderately commonplace practice on the site. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

If this is possible, I would go with the one Khan wanted to try back when we were having the problem of raffle eligibility for newer members:

Switch to every other week, prizes 1 and 2 for members with X amount of reviews/points or more. Prize 3 for members with X amount of reviews/points or less.

Prizes 1 and 2 could be either $300 and $100 or $250 and $150 or even $200 and $200.
Prize 3 would be a month's access to 5 sites TBP has an active pass to.

Khan talked about how it improved the prize amounts for the established members and gave new(er) members access to enough sites to review to establish themselves and become eligible for prizes 1 and 2.

It's easy to forget Khan's push behind the raffle was to build the community. With the original raffle awarding tickets for reviews, badges (requiring participation), trust votes, 5 replies and site comments. But before you could be eligible you had to have 10 (for a short time) or 5 points from reviews. He said the biggest complaint from newer members was the price it cost them to become eligible for the raffle.

I don't know if that would be as relevant these days with so many sites offering huge discounts but back then (2007-2009), sites averaged $25-$35 a month. He saw giving newer members access to TBP active pass sites as a sharing experience to make them feel like a part of the community. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk
