UK to track all Internet activity Just wondering what you guys thought of this one? UK launches massive, one-year program to archive every email "The data retention rules require the archival of all email traffic (the identities of the sender and receiver, but not the contents of the messages), records of VOIP telephone calls (traditional phone calls are already monitored), and information about every website visited by any computer user in the country." (emphasis mine) see http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/136610 for full story Former PornUsers Senior Administrator Now at: MyPorn.com "To get your ideas across use small words, big ideas, and short sentences."-John Henry Patterson

Yeah I heard of this one a few months ago. How you view it depends on your point of view. If you think governments are batting for us, the poor humble folk, then you could argue it's a good thing, as those terribly honest upstanding people just want to catch the bad guys and protect us all. We can therefore trust them with all that information. If that is the case, can I interest you in a game of poker? If you're like me however, you view the biggest enemy of a people as its own government. Therefore the enemy will utilise every conceivable weapon it has against you, to keep you under its control. Just as we use new technology to battle against the powers that be, huge corporations, and anti democratic governments, in the pursuit of truth and freedom, so they will use that same technology to fight us. I think this stinks to high heaven. Just as it bothers me that my local ISP already logs every url I visit. Or so I have been told. TheSquirrel is right, they (Governments) just hate it if they feel that anything is outside their control. To me, the Internet was like a breath of fresh air because I no longer had to worry about some customs official or Post Office employee confiscating any material that was considered of doubtful morality (this was in Canada) but I think they are gradually clawing back their right to keep me (or refashion me back into) a sexually upright and uncorrupted citizen. Disgusting and disturbing!

Well that's yet another nail in the coffin of our so-called democracy in the UK. What annoys me is that everyone has to put up with all this nonsense even though I'd wager that "The Authorities" know full well who the bad guys are. They just don't have the intelligence or bottle to go after them so they make all this crap up to appease Joe Voter to make it look like they are doing something about crime and terrorism. 70 years ago, Britain stood up to the 3rd Reich and the most formidable opponent we could have imagined. 2009 and we're afraid of a group of kids outside the local shop. Pathetic. www.rockchicksandbikerbabes.co.uk

Even if the government can't get their hands on that information it doesn't mean it can't be sold to the highest bidder or stolen by the craftiest hacker. The fact that so much information is being tracked by so many organizations, public or private, is what scares me. I think we have to always assume our online activity is being monitored or recorded somewhere and somehow, regardless of why. I try to be vague in what I write online and e-mails and visiting a .gov site usually gives me the willies, but maybe this is the point; scare people before they even think of doing something. This was all inevitable; when the Internet was new it was a vast frontier where people could practically think and say whatever that wanted with little interference from Big Brother, so now the powers that be are looking for methods of regulation and control, just as they do with everything else. Problem is although you make a good point is that "characters of an illegal nature" tend not to care or get scared by anything so it won't prevent those characters breaking the law, and they always seem crafty enough to get round almost any rule put in front of them. Which is a pity. I've always said that the laws of Britain don't apply to me. What I mean is that I don't go around robbing and murdering anyways so these laws don't apply to me, and 99% of the population either. Laws only really apply to the dodgy 1% and they ignore the law anyways. I don't think that if the laws on robbery were repealed for example we'd see a 1,000,000,000% increase in crime. But will this new legislation make that 99% of the population feel like criminals. I think it's starting to. www.rockchicksandbikerbabes.co.uk

This is what I mean when I talk about the way things evolve. I have never meant that it's all a giant conspiracy, it's just that the powers always find a way of using technology against us, just as we try and use it against them. I don't think most UK citizens are aware of this, I certainly don't think US citizens are aware, but there is a monitoring dome in the UK run by the US secret services. It monitors phone calls using computers. If a certain amount of key words appear, it is then that it draws the attention of human beings. For instance some key words could be - bomb, terroroism, explosion, nuclear, allah, islamic, undermine, government, subversion, chaos, terror, anarchy, etc. If a few of the key words come up then no attention is drawn, but once a certain number appear it is then the human element kicks in. Do I like a base run by a power, that could even be an enemy power on my doorstep? You can guess the answer. Is there anything I or anyone else can do about it? No. Forget talk, forget protest, it doesn't work. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try but there is nothing anyone can do. The world is run by the few rich and powerful, for the rich and powerful. It has always been and it will always be.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. This program puts a new twist on it. And "not the contents" of the messages? Believe that? I sure don't. I'd think the content would be the first point of interest to a gov't; then come the senders and receivers. And how is this massive archival being funded during our world economic crisis? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

It's funny that since all these laws on watching us have been approved the people using it the most are often public bodies like your local council who use it to catch someone putting their bin out on the wrong day. The fact is the vast majority of criminals are known but the police can't do or don't do anything about it. And as the UK government has shown time and time again, it can't be trusted with our details (child benefit details anyone)
