Any ideas how to filter out sites which are no longer updated?

As (I think) most of PU'ers, from time to time I'm trying to make a TBP-wide search, and recently I've found myself running into the problem that more and more sites in my search results becoming essentially static sites without any updates :-(( (one of more well-known sites which recently stopped updating is asstraffic, but there are LOTS more).

Eventually I've found some way to filter outdated sites out (setting Min. Bit-Rate to "5000k+" greatly reduces amount of "old" sites in results), but this way is still far from perfect, and I'm wondering if anybody knows a better way of doing it.

And while we're on the subject ;-), a question to TBP guys: is there any chance of getting "Last updated" column in "Site facts" on TBP, and "Last updated at most XX days ago" search parameter in "Advanced Search"? I realize it's lots of work, but maybe it can be updated automatically with some sort of web crawler? Motto: "All niches except for boring one!"

Hi asmith,

You bring up some good ideas on this. We have started to internally flag sites that are idle, but it's not always easy since many sites recycle content. But for the sites that simply stop updating, this is something we will start highlighting better on our sites.

At the very least like you said, a simple "Content Last Updated" date would be easy for us to add under the "Content Updates" section of the site facts.

Thanks for the suggestion asmith.

If you guys do find sites that are no longer updating, please submit a Site Facts "Error Report" from TBP and we'll add a notice for others somewhere in the site facts. The Best Porn - Ultimate Consumer Guide to Porn

Certainly agree - good point, asmith...
...and oh, yes Rick: it's a fine help to flag sites that are idle - though I see the problem with recycling.
BTW: Lately there's been some good warnings at 'comments' about sites like that - this could still be a possibility. "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Yeah, we're not always great at detecting the recycled content either. It takes someone who has spent many weeks studying the content to know when this occurs.

If you guys ever do find this, point it out with reports through TBP and of course through PU comments.

If that could be implemented, it would be quite useful.

Although obviously it is going to be easier to spot stagnant sites, rather than those that are recycling.

Yes, that's a good suggestion to filter out sites that have gone "static."

One additional thing that would be nice, now that we've gone past the 5000-review milestone, is a search engine at PU that we could use at least for keywords when slogging through the reviews. It wouldn't be perfect, as different people express things in different ways, but I've always felt that it would be a good thing to have.

... if it's not too much trouble, of course. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I think that flagging sites that are stagnant is a great idea but I think that flaging those that recycle material may be more important The stagnant ones are often easier to spot and those that recycle can often fool even pros. Long live the Brown Coats.

I agree with you, Pat. I just re-subscribed to a site I hadn't been to since March last year and found that most of the updates since then were sitting on my hard drive already.

Like Rick said, I think it would help a lot of we, the people who join the sites, would take the time to post a comment when they see a site that recycles content. I know I always check out what's been written here before considering a new site. If I see that a site adds old content as new, I'm likely to join once and forget about re-ups.
