(Another) advice about an external hd External hd is essential for PUs - with loads of good material to keep....guess a lot here has that question all the time... So - again - a question to the experts here: There's a fine deal on a Western Digital external hd here at my local dealer in Europe: 'WD Elements Desktop New Edition 2TB USB 2.0 Black' Anybody knows about this one - AND, like someone said earlier: those 2,0TB externals might not be so reliable after all - go for a couple of 1.0 or 1.5 instead.... As I mentioned in a recent thread I recently bought one of the WD 2TB drives. I've only had it a short while so can't comment on its reliability. One thing though, it installs some backup software that auto-runs w/every system boot. It appears to be a bit of a memory hog so if you're short of system resources, that might be a factor. One more thing I'll mention ... in case you get one. The drive has the ability to be password protected. When I initially installed the drive, it wanted me to enter a password. I checked the docs and didn't find a default "admin" password so I called WD. It seems the drives were supposed to default to no password. However, some of the drives (for reasons the tech guy didn't know) defaulted to password protected. There is no default admin password so the only option is to "reformat" the drive. If that happens to you, don't sweat it. The "reformat" process takes only a minute or so and the software installed on the drive is NOT overwritten. So really, it's nothing to worry about if you get one of the drives that asks for a password on initial install. Just thought I'd mention it since you wouldn't be able to use the 800 phone number provided. Yes. When you first install the drive (before saving anything onto it) it *might* ask you to log in to the drive. If it does, that's the password protection and the only way around it is to select the reformat option. It's worth noting that if you use the password option and at some time (in the future, after using the drive) forget the password, then you would lose data as there is no way (even for WD) to retrieve the lost password. FWIW, once the drive is installed, it's an easy task to disable the password protection (if that's your desire). a couple weeks ago i bought a wd 2tb ext drive and it died while i was copying files to it. i also had a samsung 1.5tb die on me too. since then ive been using a 500gb int and 1tb ext to backup my stuff. i wont buy anything over 1tb since ive had too many failures | |
