Any recommendations on porn industry related books? Little Lord WTF's post about erotic literature got me thinking about the intersection of books and porn. I haven't read fiction in a long time, but I read a lot of non-fiction instead. Does anyone know of any decent non-fiction books about the porn business? And before you dismiss this by thinking "Jeez, seeing that clip of Amber Rayne run the bases at Fenway with a baseball bat up her ass has finally sent him off the deep end" there really is such a thing as a non-fiction porn book. The only one I've read (and I'd HIGHLY recommend it) is "Prisoner of X: 20 years in the Hole at Hustler Magazine" by Allan MacDonell. It's a great read by the guy who rose to editor of Hustler magazine back when magazines ruled the porn world. Can anyone recommend any others? And if there really is a video of Amber Rayne running the bases at Fenway with a baseball bat in her ass, please send me the link.

Good question, rearadmiral. I've often thought that a book on the career of Bruce Seven would be fascinating - mainly because he had a core group of performers around him and it could get into all of those relationships - sort of like a real-life, more fetishy Boogie Nights. But I've never seen books on the porn business that are not the Linda Lovelace-style - I was abducted and raped for 7 years type of thing where everybody who remained in the business and was around any of the events described can only say, "What a pack of lies!" There was that film documentary about Shauna Grant that PBS did in the 80's that was half-decent. And even better - no, WAY better than that is the film "Kamikaze Hearts" that focused on the relationship between Sharon Mitchell and Tigr Menet at a point when Sharon Mitchell was still performing and was a heroin addict. I'll never forget one scene where Sharon Mitchell was shooting up on camera, looking right into the lens, talking about "Nobody will ever want to work with me once they see this", like she was deliberately torpedoing her performing career in order to get on with her life. It's an amazing film, got shown at a bunch of film festivals when it was first released.

I don't know of any books, rearadmiral, but there's a series called "Pornucopia" on late night Canadian TV (Cable) that seems to give a pretty good insider's look into the Porn Industry. Another one is "Webdreams." I never watch them (except for a first but also last time just to see what they are about) because I don't WANT to know what goes on behind the scenes. I like my illusions too much!

I've seen several decent documentaries on the business that aren't done by anti-porn people. I can't remember the titles though. It seems porn in print is a lot more rare. Maybe everyone figures that the stereotypical porn user is illiterate.

I've seen some (maybe all) of that series. It was fairly well done. If it is the series I'm thinking of, I remember one episode quite well. I'm pretty open-minded, but the episode titled "Same Sex Sex" was a bit creepy when they discussed the whole 'gay for pay' thing. The scene I remember distinctly was where an attractive young woman helps her husband get ready to shoot a gay scene in a boxing ring. When the scene is being filmed the documentary crew pans over to the woman sitting watching her husband have sex with another guy. From a male perspective, I'd have no trouble watching two women have sex, but I can't imagine that a woman would be as open to seeing two men go at it, especially if she was married to one of them. But maybe I'm just a little too old school...

Well, it's not really what you had in mind, but I have quite an interest in erotic photo books - some of which feature well-known porn stars and photographers. If that sort of thing might appeal, take a look at publishers: Goliath - recently published a Holly Randall book Edition Skylight - forthcoming Porn Stars project book Taschen - who also have some more documentary books, eg Big book of breasts, Big book of legs I also have a hugely entertaining and insightful book called Pink Box, about girls working in sex clubs in Japan.
