Porn documentaries worth watching? It seems like there are quite a few popping up these days, whether it's on Netflix, Crave, etc. I've yet to watch any of them, but only because I'm not sure which ones are worth my time. So, has anyone here watched any? I know the "After Porn Ends" series seems to get a lot of "hits." Should I start with those? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! You don't understand. A garage. I can't even pull in there. It's like going to a prostitute. Why should I pay, when if I apply myself, maybe I could get it for free?- George Costanza | |

I haven't watched a lot of porn docs recently but the first couple of "After Porn Ends" were pretty good. Most of them tend to get preachy pretty early and stay that way until the end. | |

There is some good stuff in the After Porn Ends series. They're especially fun if you are a fan of the performers featured. Also, the first Hot Girls Wanted doc (though it has its issues) does a great job of showing just how much the 21st century pornstar has to hustle to make it. There is also a documentary about Kink.com, simply titled "Kink" that goes behind the scenes of the BDSM powerhouse. Even if you're not a fan of BDSM, I think you will find some interesting tidbits about the industry at-large. If you are looking for great info on the porn industry, I strongly recommend these books: - The Other Hollywood by Legs McNeil: It's a 700 page oral history (meaning all interviews) that covers the history of the adult industry from the stag films of the late 50s through to the mid-00s. If there was ever a Pornography 101 in universities, this would be on the syllabus. - John Holmes: A Life In Inches: This is the biography of pornstar legend John Holmes (the inspiration for the Dirk Diggler character in Boogie Nights). | |

The best I've seen was the Rocco doc on Netflix. Rocco's got tons of charisma and the relationship between him and his cousin is interesting. | |

I remember Legs McNeil as one of the co-founders of NYC-based Punk Magazine, which chronicled the very early days of the late 70's NYC scene when bands like The Ramones & Blondie, etc were just getting started. | |

That's another good one that I forgot about. It's raw, but not preachy. (Though the story of a teen Rocco having sex with an elderly friend of his mother was a wee bit disturbing!) | |

Personally, I thought the porn industry was too sensitive about Hot Girls Wanted - any aspect of the entertainment industry - music, television, Broadway, Hollywood, etc - involves wannabes learning the hard way that not everyone makes it as a star. The girls to me didn't seem exploited in any way, they just seemed disillusioned that they weren't making it big overnight. Anyway, they made a follow-up, but instead of it being a feature-length doc, they shot episodes. I didn't watch all of them, but from what I saw, they tried harder not to appear biased against porn. The story they covered that I remembered the most showed a cam girl meeting one of her fans in person - it was awkward and kind of sad - but in a strange way sweet. The performer realized she needed to work on setting better boundaries. I'd consider giving some of their episodes a look... | |

-Agreed: 'The Other Hollywood' is a good intro to Adult films. ..with some caveats.. we didn't need two full chapters on John Wayne Bobbit. There's almost nothing on VHS utterly transforming the industry, taking it out of the peep shows into living rooms. A reminder that Al Goldstein and Jim Buckley went to jail on several occasions, had their doors broken down in the wee hours by postal inspectors and dragged off in front of their families rather than stop publishing Screw magazine. It will take more than a single reading to follow maze of theories and entanglements in the pages devoted to Traci Lords. | |
