Great post Wittyguy! Not really angry, but wonderfully cynical as usual. ;) I seriously doubt Google threatening to pull their business out (sounds dirty...) of China will have any effect whatsoever. It'll make for a great cover story or some meaningless slogan about their supposed defense of free speech but it's all bullshit. Kind of like a couple years back when all those celebrities and politicians were posing in glossy magazines for their 'support' (whatever that means) in 'helping' Darfur. Yeah, now Sudan is heaven on earth and is just coming into bloom as a new democracy. Only it's not, thanks in part to these morons who do nothing beyond talking and posing for photographs. Talk may be cheap, but it can sure sound great and make you look like a humanitarian despite your true apathy. Sadly it's not much different with Google; they're a business, and a big one at that so their only concern is money, not free speech or any other ideal they supposedly espouse. "Don't be evil"--give me a break, Google; you're out to earn money not win hearts and minds. The U.S. has and continues to do trillions of dollars in trade with China, regardless of our government's 'position' on their human rights record or of all the John Birch wannabes and armchair Napoleons calling for the U.S. to spread freedom and democracy by force to the rest of the world. At least Google doesn't have some overseas preschool sweatshop where kids are chained to tables where they assemble servers and other components to run Google's business. At least not that we know of...
Are you referring to lk2fireone's kitten-at-gunpoint avatar, because I don't even think most PU members care about that cute animal? "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Google isn't really threatening to pull out of China because they've had some kind of moral epiphany. It all comes down to security. Google's servers getting hacked makes Google look bad, really bad. Their entire infrastructure is based on cloud-computing. Up until this incident, they've had a relatively great track record regarding security. This just sets them back a great deal. If they choose to continue doing business in China, it could leave them suffering economically on a global scale. Not what Google wants. Giving up their relativity insignificant profits from China, for the sake of their entire global image, probably make sense. Plus, it gives them a justifiable reason for leaving a country that doesn't do them much good in the grand scheme of things. It's really about security and profit, not moral stance and free speech. But, if they do pull out of China (and hopefully they will, regardless of the reasons) they'll still get credit as far as free speech and human rights is concerned.

I was appalled when I realized that despite the repression of free speech in China, Google decided to stay put there. And that was a year or two ago, if memory serves. I don't buy their PR slogans that falsely elevate them on moral grounds any more than I buy into any other corporation's charm offensive. But the finger also points at any of us who use Google products or services. Or who use "Google" as a verb synonym for "search the web" for that matter. Are we really in its inescapable embrace, or are we simply passively complicit and throwing stones through the walls of our own glass houses? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

You would really have to boycott everything (literally) sold in the US to get away from china. Every component on your PC is made in china, everything in your house, the clothes you wear.. Hell, even garlic is grown in china and sold in the US.. Every single US-based business that deals with technology is guilty of the same thing (Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Acer, HP, Intel, AMD, Sony, Samsung, the list goes on & on...). Google is just a raindrop in a hurricane of businesses supporting a communist country like china.

It all comes down to the spin that is put on it. You can guarantee the bottom line is money / self interest. Anyone that thinks that his or her personnal data is safe and secure in anything that's not owned by them is either a fool or delusional. Afterall emails, photos videos and what not are basically digital information that with the right device that be viewed. Since possession is 9/10th of the law then you can consider that it's yours on your hard drive, but if it's stored on someone elses hard drive then what prevents them from accessing it and using said content for their own uses? I heard a piece on this on NPR that was very interesting, because they were talking to Chinese IT entrepeneurs, who were very critical of other companies that had stopped working in China, such as eBay, but thought that the way that Google was dealing with the issue was correct - to the point that one of them had led a movement of IT entrepeneurs that had laid flowers outside the Google headquarters in China (given Chinese government tendencies for crack-downs, this is how Chinese people make their sentiments known). The Chinese government is strangling innovation in the IT world and these would-be entrepeneurs are very frustrated by it and found Google's recent actions very helpful from their perspective.

Didn't someone hack into Sarah Palin's Yahoo! account near the end of the 2008 campaign? I doubt it yielded a gold mine of information beyond plans for future wolf hunts and Facebook postings, but it shows the vulnerability of a still somewhat popular e-mail service to whoever wants access. Hopefully the people who work for the Obama administration are smart enough to use a better service...
But don't most physical drives originate in China anyway, or at least in a country relatively close by? I doubt any hard drives are made farther away than Japan, if any are even manufactured there. I think most game consoles and their critical parts (hard drives, memory, etc.) are built in China as well. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it?
