Blue Screen Of Death!

I haven't seen one of those for a long time, ever since Windows xp was introduced. With Windows 7 the OS is even more reliable, at least it is supposed to be, but twice during the past week the blue screen of death showed up and my computer shut itself down.

Both times I was doing surfing and downloading through Firefox. I noticed that after Windows started up again that there had been a huge memory dump??? Does that mean that Firefox is using too much memory and is causing this problem.

And how could this be with a quad core chip and umpteen Gigs of memory? Anyone clued in on these things?

Could be a virus or some sort of spyware infection. I get very worried when I see one of those. In the past I have ended up having to have Windows reinstalled. It doesn't necessarily mean your computer has a virus but try and run some anti virus and anti spyware programmes. Could just be programmes that aren't functioning properly or maybe conflicting.

I don't know much about Windows 7 - had it here for all of a day and went back to Windows 2000. But I do know that Firefox can be quite a resource hog in conjunction with some sites. I saw it with AbbyWinters, even though they wouldn't admit it. Something with how that site runs on FF can slow your computer down considerably. I checked the Task Manager and found that after 10 or 15 pages or so, the memory usage was over a 150,000K. I've never seen a site before or since then that got that high. It's not all their fault - the forums are full of people trying to reduce high CPU and memory usage with Firefox, even newer versions.

I would say to try another browser, like Opera, and see if the problem doesn't go away.

I've had more problems with IE than Firefox with Windows 7. The newer versions of Firefox seem to weigh down my computer much less than previous versions.

I've experienced the blue screen maybe 3 times since I updated to Windows 7. I usually do a few restarts after I get it going again to make sure that the various maintenance elements of the system can kick in - and I do all of the scans that Norton and Windows Defender recommend doing - once a week or more frequently.

Thanks, guys. I noticed that my surfing got quite draggy just before the dreaded blue screen came on. Then, after I re-booted, "Thunderbird" got stuck loading an email. It never does that. This is the third time around that I re-booted and everything appears to be fine for now.

Squirrel's comment worries me, though. I have AVG running constantly for peace of mind, move only in "clean" circles, yet when I was looking for a potential virus I noticed that during a daily scan ten days ago AVG had found the same trojan (FakeAlert.RO)in three separate locations and had quarantined it. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Sorry messmer, didn't mean to worry you - I know sweet FA when it comes to computers, I'm probably just being alarmist. I use AVG too, it is usually very good.
