Heinlein was an important part of my formative years. In Stranger he discovered sex. You’d not think it possible for a 15 year old lad to find sex tiresome, but alas……

Years later, I was introduced to Heinlein in a café in Santa Cruz and acknowledged him for affecting my literary evolution. He was a delightful man with a twinkle in his eye. We did not touch upon his discovery of sex. I feared getting him started.

Shortly after his death, Heinlein’s widow allowed the printing of the unabridged edition of Stranger , containing several hundred additional pages. All my life I’ve heard authors complain of the heartbreaking chore of dealing with evil, soulless editors.
After reading this unabridged edition, my first and only thought was
“THANK GOD FOR EDITORS” I had a new respect for this thankless craft. Most everything Heinlein wrote after that was steeped in sex. I made it through two or three of them and then put him aside. unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.

Ah, Heinlein. I adored his books as a young man but, just like you, I was not particularly fond of "Stranger In A Strange Land" or the books that followed. For sex I turned to Henry Miller and Pauline Reage instead!

Wow, a post of mine referenced four years later - that has to be some kind of record for me, lol.

I had no idea that an unabridged version of Stranger had been released, though I'm not surprised considering how many college freshmen still adore the book. I do agree with Micha's point: Editors are wildly underrated and can really make a good book out of disorganized shite. There is some discussion that Joseph Heller's "Catch-22" was quite effective because of his editor, Robert Gottlieb. Largely because Heller's following works never quite lived up to Catch-22. Gottlieb, it turns out, is the same man that edits Robert Caro's master pieces. Actually, if you'd like to read and entirely fascinating article about Robert Caro and the finer points of journalism, editing, book making and so on, check out this article from Esquire by Chris Jones.

There is no arguing that his novels tended to be very sexual, though I would argue that "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is worth anyone's time. You'll find it rather short on sex and quite an entertaining story. It is even timely since Newt Gingrich has promised a Moon Base by his second term and that it could eventually petition to be the USA's 51st state. I also contend, that Heinlein's best work (and may have said this before) is his short stories, especially evident in his book "A Past Through Tomorrow" which collects the short stories in "The Green Hills of Earth" and adds many more.

I do find it rather funny that former naval Lieutenant would become a proponent of bisexuality and be described by Issac Asimov as a "flaming Liberal". "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I, too, am glad to see you back in this Forum, Toadsith. I always enjoyed your posts and company.

As to Heinlein, you wrote: "I do find it rather funny that a former naval Lieutenant would become a proponent of bisexuality and be described by Issac Asimov as a "flaming Liberal".

Seems strange that Asimov should see Heinlein as a flaming Liberal! To me it always seemed as if he had a split personality.

He was far from conservative when it came to sexuality in his later books, yet his philosophy of life appeared to be staunchly conservative and right wing. A favorite saying of his was TANSTAAFL: there ain't no such thing as a free lunch. He very much approved of the Darwinian model of "sink or swim" (Farnham's Freehold), and early books like "Starship Trooper(s)?" were definitely right wing in their glorification of militarism.

However I enjoyed his early work immensely even though I've always been a Liberal at heart. He WAS a darn good SF writer. Edited on Apr 23, 2012, 10:32am
