Pay-Site Search... What do you search for?

Been wondering how we can provide useful information about pay-site searches and it spawned these questions...

1. When at a pay-site that has a content search feature of some kind, what do you search for?
2. How do you prefer the results organized?
3. Would you like to see us provide more detailed info about a pay-site's search feature?
4. If so, what would you want to know?

When I use a site's search I use it to usually to find all the content from a certain model that the site has to offer. Usually, on a smaller site, this is easier with just a model index but for larger sites this is great. But, some other things I tend to search for are mostly types of scenes, such as solo, hardcore, group, etc. The categories with traits of the models I rarely use, such as boob size, body type, so on because this info seems to be rarely correct even on a site with a better search engine. Plus, I just don't find it that useful at all (a picture is worth a thousand words). But, to be honest, the search feature quality is almost non existant in swaying my decision on signing up to a site. However, on larger sites, such as DVD sites, I can see this being a huge feature. Therefore, to answer your question as to what I would want to know about the search's capabilities, would be how the site categorizes there scenes with the search functions and how accurate they are. My 2 cents.

I believe you'll find some answers in the poll question from about a week ago (but, you probably know that already). So, here's my take on it the subject.

* If the site has a search function, make sure that it works. Some sites have search functions but do a lously job tagging the scenes/sets. Teendreams comes to mind. They have a 7 function search function yet even plugging in one or two items on a search request either yields nothing or hundreds of results. That, to me, is worthless.

* Assuming the search function operates at an acceptable level I guess I like for two types of search. First, I like to a site with general catergories to look under (Pics, Vids, Streams, etc.) with each category being broken down further into subsets like solo, toy, hardcore, lesbian, etc. I would call this general level of search "general categories". Second, I want the search engine function to allow me to specifically search for something more specific than what these general categories provide. It should let me search by the following functions: model name; specific type of action, and the model's features (blond, brunette, legs, bust, butt, etc). The list could go on but I think everyone knows what I'm talking about.

I should note that this type of search (the one going beyond general categories) really only makes sense on a large site. A solo model's site or a new site in specific niche probably won't have or need a souped up search engine. In that case, they should have clearly stated updates so that if I decide to rejoin in the future I'll know where I left off.

In fact, ideally all sites should have clearly labelled updates so users don't have to fumble around if they decide to rejoin. I would like this to be noted in future reviews.

I would also like to know if their is a model directory (again, this only makes sense on a larger site) and if there is any personal info about the model. The ideal model directory would have their name, other known names, thumbnails showing all the sets and scenes available, and some other personal info. You may think this is indirectly related to a search system but I view it as part of the navigation system that I use to find what I'm looking for, thus I lump into the search category. My point in bringing this up will be seen below.

* How the search results are organized doesn't really matter much to me. Usually you see them sorted by their posting date (most recent first) which is fine by me just so long as the thing works.

* Yes, I would like to see a little more info about a site's search function. However, trying to explain the quality of the search function could get complicated and wordy just as this post is turning into a novel. I would suggest perhaps using a 4 tiered search ratings system. Tier 1 = no search and no general categories. Tier 2 = General categories but no specific search. Tier 3 = General categories plus a model directory. Tier 4 = General categories plus model directory plus a basic search sytem (allows you search under several functions). Tier 5 = general categories, plus detailed model directory plus an advanced multi function search system (top notch search). In the case of a network, I also want to know if the search works across the network or only for each site. You could have a little explanation of the level of search after each general "tier" description.

I'm thinking that the tier system also works well for scoring. You didn't mention how the TBP reviewers would score a site a based on search capability. My take is that a large site with lousy search is going to get dinged several points because of it. The tier ratings system would work well for setting the review score as it relates to the search function.

So, there, you got the encyclopedia answer. Overall, I would say that a decent search function is nice but it's rarely going to be a deal breaker for me on whether or not I join. Edited on Mar 25, 2009, 12:48pm

1) It depends on how much detail it goes into but normally if I search for something, it's normally clothing style, boob size and/or labia size (if site has it). When I first join a site, I normally use the above just to check out what they have. Normally after that, I really don't use the search feature much.
2)Most sites seem to just show a preview thumbnail of the gallery/model and that seems to work pretty good.
3)I would like to see atleast just a brief rundown of what search options it has, if any. Is it just model name? Or does it have a ton of options? Example, clothing style, brest size, content involved in shoot (g/g, b/g, solo), etc.

Let me say first that I doubt search engine quality will be playing a key part in my purchase decisions in the short/medium term. There's also so many differences among them that I can't imagine how to format that information on TBP. I'd rather get recent site facts than search engine information anyway.

1. 90% model names. 10% particular sex act/fetishes. I'd rather perform more sex act searches but pay-site search engines are always so lousy it's impossible to find anything so I just don't bother.
2. Release date, model's last name, production date. Relevancy sorting might become handy if they got the scene keywording right. More important than sorting is what info you get on each piece of content on the SERP (performers' names? release date? original DVD? studio? scene keywords? small animation? rating?)
3. For big sites, it might be useful to tell apart one site from the other. As I said, it seems difficult to convey that info to PUs. It's not like with video formats, picture counts or video lengths.
4. What info do you get on the SERP. Also what type of searches a user can perform. Perhaps some info on the perceived relevancy and accuracy of the results.

Thanks for the replies so far... pretty much what I thought. Big sites, need accurate model names, accurate micro-niches, etc. Too bad it's hard to come by good search for such sites. It's a tough task for sure. The Best Porn - Ultimate Consumer Guide to Porn

I search for softcore solo photos and hardcore b/g videos. I don't usually search niches; they just add up and make things too complicated. (Was just at OnlyCuties and that's a good example of "too complicated.") So I'll just go right by things that feature pregnancy, etc. in the results.

I like the results organized either just chronologically or all of a given model's content in one place. It's the "Keep It Simple" principle.

If TBP could provide more such detailed info on search features, that would be a plus, but actually they still don't do enough with the more basic question of "hi rez" photos. Why don't they give the details of the photo sizes available at least in the content of the reviews, if not in the site facts near the top of the review page? A fair number of PU reviewers do better at this than TBP does.

See, "hi rez" doesn't mean enough. Are they 1280 px, or are they 5000px? That's a huge difference! And what different sizes are available in a photoset? It's a very neglected point at TBP. Thanks for reading. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Great question:

I like being able to search by ethnicity
hair color
build
boob size
clothing (bikinis, socks, schoolgirl outfits always are nice to see listed)
category of material (solo, girl/girl, boy/girl) - if they get more detailed than that I'm happy

I agree with the need for sites to have the proper models name. Far too many sites alter the name of the performer for their own reasons.

I like the idea of a niche search option but can see a few issues with that. The site administrator(s) would have to be careful in properly tagging scenes. Because some scene might contain more than one niche then you would get multiple hits for the same scene. Long live the Brown Coats.

I agree, the current system of rating pics "hi rez" when they exceed the average screen size doesn't cut the mustard for us photo junkies.

As for the search stuff, I guess I find it frustrating that large sites don't take a few seconds and attach some search tags to their sets/scenes. It would make life a lot easier and get them some cheap positive points on review sites. Brazzer's does this well.

I agree, this is something we'll be improving on this year. The image resolution is probably the most requested. The Best Porn - Ultimate Consumer Guide to Porn

An enthusiastic "Awriiight!" It will be a nice improvement. I'll be patient. That's a LOT of updating we're talking about! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.
