Right now I'm watching "Copland" with Sylvester Stallone. Together with Rambo part 1 this is the film to watch ...

My favorite when a bit loaded is: "In the heat of the Night" from the deep south - with Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier - won a hell of a lot of Oscars back in 1967 - just a great movie! "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Ah, Cop Land; Michael Rapaport did an excellent job in that if I recall correctly. That was a pretty quality movie that somehow didn't do anything for Stallone's career. However, Rambo: First Blood - that is a freaking awesome movie - not exactly quality but epically fun to be sure. Brian Dennehy is so good at villains. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" The wrath is a quality movie, but I'm still a fanboy for IV, The Voyage Home. Something about a Bird of Prey decloaking over a whaling boat - I think that has to be one of my favorite cinematic moments ever. Plus it is such an amusing movie, lots of character interaction, less time spent on blowing crap up. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Sadly, with the thousands of movies I've seen, I haven't watched that - I'm putting that I'm Netflix queue now! :-P Rod Steiger is a favorite of mine, so it is silly that I haven't seen that. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Second Grand Order Poobah in the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalo

What is a bank holiday? And you said parts - it isn't a national holiday? I've visited Germany once for Cebit in Hannover back in '06 - that is a hell of a fairgrounds. Checked with the tourism board for the city and the only thing they recommended other than the fairgrounds, was the Zoo. And recommend it they did; copiously. I was there a week, so I did go to the zoo for a day; it is a hell of a zoo - some of the exhibits look like sets from Raiders of the Lost Arc. I'll have to visit again one of these days; a friend of mine lives outside of Munich, and my brother lived in Berlin for a year and is itching to go back, for the donar kabobs I think might be reason #1 - lol "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Only in those parts with a majority of catholics.
Hahaha ... Hannover as a city is almost dead. If there wasn't the fair(s) it would be 100% dead. Sorry to say so but you've been in one of the worst parts of Germany.
To have a Döner Kebab in Berlin has to be quite an experience! It is said to be almost as good as the famous Currywurst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currywurst) which is a speciality you definitely have to taste! If you want to see an interesting city you should go for Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg or München (Munich). Those are the places to be!

A movie that I've seen only once or twice and I think I had my problems with it because of all the humour ... have to see it again soon.

Yeah - I got that impression from it a bit, but I was there primarily for the show - which was wildly impressive, freaking huge. People that go to CES and think they've been to an electronics fair just haven't had the same experience. The sheer vastness of CeBit is staggering. Though a bit tiring, 2 or 3 days is plenty - the full time is not worth it. I'd hate to work at one of the booths though. Anyway, yeah, Hannover... fair grounds and zoo. Amusingly, the location for the State Fair Grounds in New York State has similar qualities. Syracuse has fair grounds, a zoo and a very large mall. Unless you are a local, you aren't going to find a lot of exciting things to do. Well, there are strip clubs, but Hannover had those as well. I didn't stop by - perhaps if I had a local with me that would have been another matter. Though I was amused that there was a McDonald's straight across the street from a strip club, that would not go down well over hear in ye old conservative USA.
Aww - damn, now I'm all hungry! I had a couple of Kebab's in Hannover, they were tasty - but as you said, I doubt they are as tasty as those available in Berlin :-) The currywurst looks great as well - I love curry in general - and combine that with sausage, well why not?
I really really wanna visit Berlin - and München would be sweet as well, especially since I can get my friend to be a bit of a tour guide. Plus he said I could sleep on the floor, no prob. Yay for saving money (not that the hostels are very expensive, but meh, gotta save cash when ya can). But Berlin sounds sweet - I'd choose that over Paris any day. Actually, never really interested in seeing Paris - I'd rather visit Marseilles. I know it is supposed to be dangerous, but after watching all those french "Taxi" movies it looks awesome and sunny. I'd say it's dying out. For me this was never an issue because I try to judge people because of the way they act. We do have some friends that come from there and they have all fine personalities. Surprisingly enough the girls from East Germany are mostly pretty, intelligent and emancipated without being strange because of this ;-).

From the other side of the question, as to the feelings of the former East Germans themselves; and mr smut will have to correct me if this is wrong as a generalization; but I knew one former East German very well (she was my brother's girlfriend for quite a few years) and she was very keen on distancing herself from anything communist and Russian. She was taught Russian in school, but would never speak it, even on request out of curiosity. She always wanted to make clear that she and her family had zero ties with communism or the like. If this was tied to dislike of communism or fear of ostracism - I do not know. Interestingly, she had no fear of discussion of Nazism and felt very far removed from that. My brother was a bit upset when I asked her to translate what some of the Nazi guards were yelling in Wolfenstein 3-D (yeah, the game was current at the time), but she wasn't bothered and happily translated it. (They were yelling about medics and airports - I guess "airport" sounded cool to the guys at id.) "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" See it, Toadsith. Rod Steiger is just great as policechief in a small Mississippi-town. This movie was one of the reasons why I/we have done quite a few trips to the South since 1990 - all the way from Europe. This movie graps the atmosphere down there...even if it's from 1967. Reminds me of what I heard from people that grew up on the wrong side of the wall that parted Germany for such a long time. Oh, and b.t.w. Wolfenstein 3D was one of the most played games when it came out. I can't remember how many soldiers of the Wehrmacht or how many SS troopers I virtually killed ;-).

My brother who still lives in Germany told me at the time that the game was forbidden there. He took my copy home with him after a visit to Canada. Talk about guilt, killing all those Wehrmacht soldiers. I felt like a traitor. :-)

I'm not too keen on Berlin (The Ku-Damm is okay!) or on Frankfurt, because they decided to leave the past behind when they rebuilt after WWII. I do like Munich but love most of all the medieval looking smaller cities and towns with half timbered houses that are still found throughout Germany.

It's fordidden to sell the game but it's o.k. to own a copy which is quite crazy because of the music used which is the Horst-Wessel-Lied. It is strictly forbidden to play this song because of the meaning it had to the Nazi party and it's also still popular with the Neonazis.
