Orgasms in Victorian Times vs. Now I have recently been watching videos from CasualTeenSex (which I will review soon). I think these videos were made somewhere in Russia. Even when the women enjoy the sex and have orgasms, they are all very quiet about it. I got the distinct impression that they are repressed, and that their culture dictates that they are not supposed to enjoy sex, and that if they enjoy it, they shouldn't show their enjoyment. On the Tell Me More program on NPR today (at npr.org, click Programs, then Tell Me More, then Dec. 7, 2009) is a segment "Female Sexuality Takes Center Stage With 'The Vibrator Play'", a play currently running in Lincoln Center, New York. The play concerns the 19th century medical concept of "hysteria" and its relief by manual or vibrator-induced paroxysms (orgasms) by physicians. Mechanical vibrators were invented for this purpose before light bulbs! The playwrite makes the point that during the Victorian era, women somehow developed collective amnesia about orgasms. She says that orgasms and how to induce them were well known in B.C. China, Renaissance Europe, and ancient India. It is interesting to contemplate a culture so repressive that it erased women's understandings of their own sexual needs, even to the point where there was no word for orgasm. Although we are surrounded by open sexuality now, it seems clear to me that in porn and elsewhere, the Victorian repressiveness persists in the difficulty that many women have in being open about their enjoyment of sex and orgasms. Perhaps this is worse in present-day Russia than in the USA. (The same NPR program also included "Adults Unlock Their Teen Diaries On Stage" and "Psychologist Wants Better Treatment For Women With Sexual Disorders". Hooray for Michel Martin!)

I think Michael Franks had the line: "You, you're the quiet, shy type/Always whisper, never shout it." And I've known some myself. Frankly, it's not necessary to make much vocal noise to enjoy sex. I don't myself, either. And it's not necessarily cultural. I once witnessed a woman of a certain stereotypically "repressed" culture -- Japan -- carrying on like nobody's business, and it wasn't on a porn flick, either. It was real life. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

My ex-wife was from Mexico, and her father had a live-in girlfriend with him here in the US. She was in her late twenties, also a Mexican girl, had three children with him, and was a real stunner to look at. One afternoon my ex brought up the subject of orgasms with her, and this woman had no idea what she was talking about. She had no idea that women had orgasms. On the flip-side, my ex lived for a time with her brother and sister-in-law, and claimed that her sister-in-law was so vocal during sex you could hear her all through the house. My ex thought this was funny and it seemed to me she may have believed her sis-in-law was putting it on, as if to say, "Hey listen, we're having sex!" Edit: Rut-roh, Drooler has 666 posts... That just sounds incredibly sad. I wonder how many women there have been that have had no concept of a female orgasm? I understand that from a purely procreation standpoint there would be no need for a culture to be open about discussion or even just recognition of the female orgasm, but it would seem inevitable unless it was an extremely repressive society such as the Victorian west. I have never really understood why so many cultures have been this way beyond the obvious offenses of misogyny and our brain-dead fear of sex. I mean really what's the harm? It's not like a woman is going to waste a bunch of tissues or get pregnant just from having an orgasm. In fact I bet a lot of countries could have held off women's suffrage for a few more years with wider distribution of 'anti-hysteria' devices. Now as far as female ejaculation is concerned...that issue probably won't even be decided in our life times -- much more 'study' is needed. ;) "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? As for female ejaculation, I have only my personal testimony. My ex-wife had a sometimes copious issue during orgasm. It got all over, and was rather pungent. Friends (mostly female friends) have claimed that this issue was urine, but it did not smell or feel like urine. I never saw it squirt, though. The most convincing fem-ejac I've seen was in an old porno called "C.U.N.T.S" I saw one by Maria Ozawa, masturbation-induced, but it came at the end of a scene after several guys had come inside her, and I think maybe it was the residuum from that. It was in one of the uncensored vids I got from J Sex Network. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
