Mr. Administer........

Sir....It occurred to me that with your experience and knowledge about this stuff, have you ever thought of writing a book? Somebody ought to. Edited on Oct 18, 2010, 06:38pm

hahaha ... that's a good one. That you think anyone would be interested in the memories I have of the industry is flattering, to be sure. Still, I fear some of what I know about the early days of this industry might earn me a contract on my head if published.

I guess that means you're not running for office anytime soon either. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Oh, yes. Keep the skeletons in the closet, but if that running for State should ever come up, I'd put a pressure on my US relatives and friends where to put their vote.... "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Khan,

I really think you should reconsider. The evolution of porn from "The Immoral Mr. Teas" to the sophistication of the industry today would seem to be a reasonably good, broad based theme that would interest a wide range of people.

And from your unique position where you actually engage with us Porn Users and also with the web element, I, for one, would think you could really write a successful book on the subject.

My sentiments exactly. Considering the debth of involvment he's had in this business, and with his refreshingly unique style of writing, I think his book would be smashing accomplishment.

You could write a novel based on your real experiences and publish it under a pseudonym. Or you could do one of those "Secrets of the ..." TV shows and be interviewed with your face in darkness and your voice disguised. That would be pretty cool.

(Funny how the mass media is where so many "secrets" are being kept.) I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Well, he might have some competition in the controversy department with Krystal Ball (yes, that's her real name)--who's currently running for U.S. congress and also from Virginia--what with some old party photos of her.

I wish I was living in her district just so I could vote for her--that would be a vote of confidence I can assure you!

To be fair that's supposedly her then-husband wearing the 'nose' and it's not like she was caught in some public bathroom tapping her shoe into the next stall for some gay sex. Or worse, the Christine O'Donnell thing. And, rare for a politician, she didn't deny anything about them. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? OK, so how about one that Khan might actually answer? How the heck did he end up in the porn world anyways ... just guessing that this wasn't what his high school counselor suggested.

Well, to be honest I sort of backed into working in the world of online porn. By that I mean I never actually planned to get into the biz.

I had been working for the gov't for 15 years, having worked my way up from being a maintenance machinist to being a General Foreman in the Plant Maintenance division of an aircraft rework facility. Due to some political maneuvering by our former vice president (he was then head of DoD) the base where I was working was being closed. I had some health issues (thanks to the many hazardous materials I'd been exposed to ... that the gov't refused to take credit for) that made working from home an attractive option.

I'd been messing around with computers and online communication since the mid 80's. On an informal level, I'd been writing database applications, spreadsheets and setting a few companies up with BBS's. Given my skill set and my desire to work at home, I figured I'd try my hand at helping small businesses computerize some of their applications and get set up online.

I got a small hosting account and set up a tiny web site (just a few rough pages). Well, I got a few jobs by word-of-mouth from past businesses I'd helped but the web site wasn't doing squat. I decided to set up a little pin-up site to help drive a little traffic to my business site. Back then people didn't know what they do today about targeted traffic. In those days, you got your links out any place you could. Since I managed forums for CompuServe I set up the girlie pics site on AOL so as not to shit where I ate. Just a few pages of pics with links to the business site. Since AOL didn't allow nudes it was all non-nude.

The business part still didn't do much but the adult site started doing pretty good. I decided to expand to nude photos so that meant switching to another hosting company. The first few months the site grew as did the traffic it saw. I started exchanging links with other adult sites and soon found myself at the original (and what was then the only) adult webmaster resource. It just so happens that the resource was founded by our fearless leader Rick.

I started helping Rick manage his fast growing webmaster resource and we found it was a good fit. My focus shifted from running my sites to helping him build a top-notch adult online resource. Since I ran CompuServe's forum for new members for several years I had experience helping newbies which worked out well since the industry was growing fast and each passing week brought a flood of new webmasters looking to try their hand at starting adult sites. Add to that the ongoing discussions and debates (often quite heated) that were, in effect, shaping this industry.

So you see, without ever planning to be in the adult online industry, I found myself in the middle of what was virtually ground zero for the adult web explosion that followed.

The rest, as they say, is history. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

That would make it...late '80s to early '90s then?

Yeah, definitely sounds like you worked for the government alright. Anything related to the military, even on the civilian side, seems to be hazardous to your health. Really sorry about the health issues. I can well relate to the hazard thing, having worked in an asbestos environment and living in an area surrounded with shipyards and hosting one of the largest Navel Bases in the world.
As a result, with a smorgasbord of potential lawsuits just waiting to be plucked, Lawyers have sprouted about the area like fertle Kudzu.

It might interest you to know, a little more than a decade ago when I bought my first computer, I had, and used Compuserve as my ISP...unfortunately for more years than I care to remember. That was a time when the word "freeze-up" became a staple of my vocabulary. Edited on Oct 20, 2010, 11:58pm Edited by Staff on Oct 21, 2010, 04:25am (Khan: fixed quoteback)

Boy does that bring up memories. I tried Prodigy. Lousy content. Then AOL. Their inbound modems crashed. Then CS, and it froze more than Eskimo pee.

And no internet porn. Definitely not the "good ol' days!
