The Truth About Pornstars? Came across this article today called "Deep Inside: A Study of 10,000 Porn Stars and Their Careers." A longish read about a guy who spent way too much time digging through the IAFD database. As per most studies of this type, his conclusions are only as good as the source material which as we know ain't always true. However, it does cover a lot of subjects that have repeatedly come up in the forum over the years and gleans some interesting facts. Worth a read.

The biggest problem with IAFD as a data source for all porn scenes, especially when it comes to the last 5-10 years, is that they don't include any internet scene that hasn't come out on DVD. Which can make it thoroughly incomplete when it comes to things like number of scenes shot, and number of partners.

Pretty interesting article, even if it only analyzes IAFD--where are all my lovely Euro ladies? . An interesting paragraph about the average number of onscreen partners between men and women:
Frankly I would have thought Nina Hartley would have "slept with" (really misleading term for porn) far more men than 199, but what a lucky bunch of 199 men! And I knew Tom Byron had been around since the '80s but I wouldn't have thought he had the most onscreen partners. In a documentary I watched recently Randy West mentioned the number of women he had slept with and it was a few thousand and it didn't sound unrealistic; 3 decades nonstop, including all that gonzo he did as director/actor. But who's counting? The article also compared porn to being more like a sport, since there was so many genres and types of fetishes, though I find porn far less offensive and harmful than any sport. Seriously, when's the last time a bunch of drunken porn fans went crazy and had themselves a victory riot? I guess it would be hard to turn over cars and break a lot of things with only one free hand, but still. It also dispelled the idea that the majority of women get in, do one shoot, and leave. It says the majority do more than one, though it still quotes anti-porn porn gossip blogger Luke Ford: "Most girls who enter the porn industry do one video and quit. The experience is so painful, horrifying, embarrassing, humiliating for them that they never do it again." Which I guess could be true if that one video is Max Hardcore or something similarly traumatic but it doesn't really say much about how "bad" the industry is to women. You know, as opposed to how humanely and respectfully they will be treated in pretty much any other job armed with an equivalent education and background. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. There's a related study done at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania that dispells the myth that women who go into porn generally have low self-esteem. So I guess if you have a daughter and believe that the name you give your child will determine her self-image and therefore her fate, name her "Nikki Lee." LOL Thanks for the link to the study, Wittyguy. There are reasons to be skeptical of some of underlying (a-hem) data, but it's still interesting. The comments made in the article comparing porn to sport, I think, were not too far afield. It helps to be athletic, considering the demands of performing in a scene. It's why I pointed out some time ago that porn stars must have high kinesthetic intelligence; they are "fucking smart." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. IAFD has an extensive list of Euro performers but I think that since most of their movies are/were produced in Europe then the person making the article avoided using them. Possibly because he lacked the necessary info to add them to the article.
It actually makes perfect sense that she slept with such a relatively small number of male performers in her career because the ratio of female to male performers is so high that any female performer who has slept with 50 or more males has had a very good career. She may have only slept with 199 males but what that number doesn't say is that she slept with many of them multiple times. She slept with Tom Byron at least 25 times but his name is only mentioned once.
I think the main appeal for Tom is that he had a baby face which made him the perfect guy for any role requiring a teen/young man and this was often the role for most porn guys. It also didn't hurt that he could act as well as shoot great sex scenes with the different porn girls. Another reason is that Tom Byron came into the industry at just the right time because finally porn was no longer relegated to just porn theaters because a small piece of technology called the VCR made it's appearance at about that time and and this is probably why porn is what it is today. The industry recognized what the VCR could mean for porn and in return the makers of VCR saw the huge profits they could make by allowing porn producers access to their technology. One of the best example of bad decision making you can ever see is from the makers of the Betamax. They unlike the makers of VCR's decided that they wouldn't allow the porn industry access to their product and this is why their superior piece of technology was relegated to Long live the Brown Coats.

I found it a good read but it appears as if the format makes it incomplete as a whole. but interesting. Since 2007
