Watching Porn In Public I read a funny article this morning in the Washington Post, "Publicly, a whole new lewdness," about the increasing prevalence of porn viewing going on in public areas. I mean as public as public transportation, airports, airplanes, sporting events (take me out to that ballgame!), and just about anywhere you can fire up your laptop or iPod and offend the strangers around you (mostly women it seems). Now I am all for more porn all the time, but this does seem a little much. For starters, all these people around you did not pay for the content in question and are essentially being entertained for free. That's ridiculous! Okay, so the article was more about etiquette in public spaces, or at least how "gross" all the "yuckiness" is to prudish women, but it still seems taking it one step too far. One hilarious quote that has kept me laughing all day was from a airline stewardess: "I have never had anyone say, 'I refuse to stop. I must watch this dirty movie.' " Classic quote! In fact I think I am making it my new sig, I find it so funny. (Note: this article was in the Style section of the paper, which means it is not much better than a cross between a tabloid and a blog. The article is pretty lighthearted and funny though.) "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove Edited on Nov 12, 2009, 05:52pm

"... people are inhaling secondhand smut." Well, I'm here for firsthand smut ;-). To be honest I would never ever even think about watching porn in public. This is something private and not meant for strangers out in the streets, in a bar or while being on a train, in a stadium or elsewhere. Anyhow thanks for this amusing article.

These are the same people who have a cellphone stuck to the side of their head in the grocery store, talking about stuff like how sick they got from drinking last night. People have become blind to their surroundings, like our electronics put us in a bubble where no one can see us or hear us. I turned around and told the girl that she might want to give up drinking if it made her sick. She started to cuss me out for listening in when I interrupted her. "This isn't your living room and my ears aren't broken. If you can't wait to tell someone what color you were puking up, I'd recommend you text it". The four other people in line clapped, and the cashier was laughing so hard she had to stop scanning. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I think it's totally inappropriate, especially when theres a chance children can see it I mean come on thats messed up. As for anywhere else it's just plain manners, you wouldn't pull out a dirty mag on a plane why a movie? besides it's not like you can 'enjoy' it fully. I think it's just weird. Those people have a screw loose.

Funny to see that you know this saying in Italy too :-) in Germany you could say: "Das Mädchen hat doch eine Schraube locker!" @RagingBuddhist That's a nice reaction of yours and hopefully some good lesson for this girl even though I know of many youngsters that would go on like this only a couple of hours later. Weird as I was thinking that my generation would be lost in a way but it seems things can even get worse!

Unfortunately, you're probably right. I was a teenager once (pretty sure I was, anyway) and I didn't like "old guys" like me either. She probably got to the parking lot and bitched to whomever she was talking to in the store about "this nasty, old motherfucker". Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I am just picturing your old avatar and what she must have been facing when you spoke to her. The horror! :) "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I missed this term reading the first time, but it's pretty funny too. I just hope they don't demonize and outlaw porn to the extent that they have done with cigarettes in the U.S. The porn industry really has no lobby, especially when compared to the tobacco industry. Next thing we know there are going to be surgeon general warnings on DVDs and home pages. Something like "WARNING: Porn viewing causes blindness, forearm fatigue, hard drive failure, and may complicate marriage." "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. I think I've told you guys before - I'm not that pretty anymore! That picture was from over 10 years ago. But, when I have encounters with people like that, I don't make faces or gestures. There was a commercial on TV years ago for perfume that said, "If you want to catch someone's attention, whisper". I learned something from that. When they expect you to get loud, telling 'em off in a calm voice usually makes a deeper impression. The key word being 'usually', of course. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I present a virtual "Atta Boy!" button to Raging Buddhist for his reminding the girl that there is such a thing as appropriate public behavior. Discussing one's recent binge-induced flashing of the hash at cell phone volume in a foodstuffs outlet is definitely over the top. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Strong words, quietly spoken. They can be quite chilling if you get the timing right! ;0) Admiral of the PU Hindenburg. 2009 PU Award Hilarious Post of the Year 2010 PU Award ( I would have preferred it to be Helpful Post of the Year for Guys who Hate 'Retail Therapy' ) :0/ Sanity is in the eye of the Beholder!
