Raging webmasters It is obvious that webmasters can and do come here with an agenda. Further, that is not really wrong. I think we all agree that we have to keep their input at a level that doesn't damage the integrity of PU. That being said, I see nothing wrong with responding to them or their members if they cross the line of blatant biased commercialism and/or civility. However, I have seen posts recently about preferring not to respond. If we don't, they control this site. I think we cannot let another similar situation get out of hand as this one did. If we don't support the site as well as each other, we cease to have a community here. I know most of us do not want to rehash recent events, but if we don't discuss this topic now, will we do it in the middle of the next controversy? I propose polite questioning of what seems to be shills and let them act immaturely if they want to. If they do, we MUST support each other. Yes?

It makes sense to have some sort of community effort to deal with these kind of attacks. One suggestion would be to let Raging Buddhist off his leash and set him on them. Meanwhile I'll have a nice cup of tea and some scones. I did make a suggestion about registering disapproval on one separate thread, but not contributing to their posts. I think we need some suggestions. You know, we never saw Wittyguy and Hybrid in the same place did we? No it couldn't be...

Wow! Nominated for President and the Pornusers Watchdog, both in the same day! Don't want to be President and I'm divorced, so I'm already off the leash. I don't think making a thread to complain about "things" is a good idea. Doing it that way wouldn't bump up the offending post, making it less visible, but I think it would still add to the drama. There would still be accusations of singling people out and picking on them. We're in a bad place now. We've seen how easily the forum can be upset and I really don't see where there's too much we can do about it other than to be a little more tactful in our questioning things we don't agree with. I'm guilty of it myself, but maybe not throwing the word 'shill' out so quickly would be a good start. If they want to get ugly, I say people should chime in and explain that, to get a response, they'll need to keep it civil. If they persist? I don't know... How about we start doing something along the lines of people typing "Your posts will be ignored until you read the rules and comply with them"? An odd solution, maybe - but I'm just reaching for answers to the problem here. And I think Witty is too smart to get involved in riots. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

RB, I am reacting to your mentioning of rules. The problem as I see it is that Khan can't make tough rules that are explicit about exactly what is unacceptable. We are in a gray area here regarding exactly what is inappropriate. Khan's other problem here is that if he cracks down on offenders, we can expect to hear from other members of the same website. This time it was three members, what would we do if it were three dozen or even a hundred? I don't see how Khan can do much here, as this is a site about opinions. Also, we can't and should not forbid or even discourage newbies from raving about a site they genuinely like. Unless someone has a better idea, we have to let anyone and everyone express opinions, even if we suspect they are shills or for some other reason will never be sincere members of PU. How they handle our questions, I hope asked tactfully, will tell all of us how to react to them. Just because Khan and company have a hard time making rules doesn't mean we have to simply stand by and accept behavior that is against what we want the site to be. I liked WG's post about the unwritten rules. Another point I feel strongly about is that we should give positive trust ratings if their reviews deserve it. Maybe some will stay and review other sites. I for one had hopes that larss might become a real PUer as he is a major contributor to freeones. We have to avoid coming across as being a closed club that others cannot join, even if they join to review and promote only one site. Lets try to convert them, which I know is not possible very often. It certainly was not possible in the recent disaster. Edited on Apr 11, 2010, 02:17pm

Well, consider this: If we do respond in kind and continue to do so once the level of the discussion has descended into carping and mudslinging, they control the discussion as much as we do and not for good reasons as far as I can see. You can either be one of the "energizers" of the "riot" or you can find better things to do. A riot is no longer a riot once it dwindles down to, say, two or three people. We can't support each other in having a civil tone of discourse while we're out there "supporting" each other in kicking the asses of the nasty. The moment I saw Miss What's-Her-Name's baiting thread title about us "experts" becoming porn webmasters, I knew that she was out to make trouble, and I didn't care a whit to help out. I just answered as factually and succinctly as I could, hoping for the best, and then stayed out of it. How dirty lowdown could the whole thing have gotten if we'd all done it that way? I mean, nobody attacked me, and I hadn't attacked anybody. Figure that! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Apr 11, 2010, 02:57pm

mbaya - I don't see where anyone would have to make up any new rules. As they're written now, we have a good paragraph to fall back on "Upon entry into this site, each user certified that they were an adult, therefore, we ask that you conduct yourself as an adult at all times. It is natural for different people with different tastes from different backgrounds to disagree. However, even when you disagree you should conduct yourself as a responsible adult and refrain from personal attacks and put-downs of fellow users." That should cover most of the troublemaking. The gray areas, like some of the thinly veiled jabs that I've seen thrown in, with some convoluted explanations as to why they were being taken wrong, I think we'll just have to accept as part of the faceless communication through cyber space. Someone with a grudge is going to try to shake things up and anonymity is easy to hide behind. At that point, I think ignoring the offensive post would be in order. If no one cares to comment about something else in the thread, the thread will just die. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

You have a good point. I am concerned about the consequences of doing nothing though.

As we don't own or moderate the site, there is really relatively little effective we can do. Those that enjoy a debate that gets somewhat out of hand respond in a hopefully controlled manner. Kudos to those that can do that. I can't trust myself to do that, and I don't want to get banned from here if I 'lose it.' So I usually take the opposite approach, not biting. It is tricky when you are being goaded, I know. If they are left with no-one to argue with they get bored and wander off to cause trouble elsewhere. I think the outcome was satisfactory, if a little protracted in getting there. TBH I would suggest more attentive Moderation would be the best way forward, as the ground rules are already there. Capn, More attentive moderation as you call it, may possibly have fanned the flames even more.
