Technical question about posting links in a thread

I see here and on other sites where people will include a link to a third-party site where they've uploaded a picture. They are able to name the link something other than the web address name. How do they do that? Do you name the link within the site you're posting to or at the hosting site?

It's BBCode. I tried to put up an example, but for some reason the links didn't work. It kept adding this forum to the links. There are numerous BBCode tutorials online that can show you how it works. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. Edited on May 10, 2014, 02:31pm

Thanks for that. I'll check them out.

Our forum is custom written and doesn't technically allow true bbc code

For instance, an image just links to the larger version. You can't "wrap" it in another link (URL).

But ... you can embed images in your post. If you need further help with that, just let me know.

You can also wrap regular text in a url to make it a link. Again, if you need help, just holler. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Guess I learned something today. I didn't know you could custom write a site to change how BBCode works. I'd never run into the "change" before now. I tried using this as an example (with parentheses instead of brackets):

(url=www.pornusers.com)rearadmiral's favorite site(/url)

It came up with this:

rearadmiral's favorite site

It changes to:
https://www.pornusers.com/forum/www.pornusers.com
which isn't an actual page. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

RB, perhaps I didn't say it well. What I meant was that our forum is, from the ground up, custom coded. It technically doesn't use bbc code at all. Some of the features that are normally done with bbc are built into our forum as well.

Examples:

1. just entering www.pornusers.com should automatically link to https://www.pornusers.com (that full url was wrapped in an {ignore}{/ignore} tag so it would display)

2. I can put the words, " link to pornusers " and make them a link to PU's root domain page. The syntax is
{url=insert full url here}text to be linked{/url}

* in both of these examples the brackets have been changed to curly brackets for proper display.

Hope that helps Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I thought that that's what I did with (url=www.pornusers.com)rearadmiral's favorite site(/url).
but it kept linking to a non-existent page.

I'll just chalk it up to early senility and move on. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I think that I may know so little about what I'm asking that I may have asked the wrong question. That or I just don't understand the answers.

For clarification, what I'd like to learn to do is add a link in a post but name the link something other than the actual host web address. So, for example, say I want to add a thread and say that Rose Red could quickly be added to my list of favourite models and include a link to a photo:

http://img140.imagevenue.com/img.php?ima...titled_123_174lo.jpg

But I've seen (here I think) where people are able to name the link something else, like "Rose Red" or something.

But maybe this is something that can't be done here.

Thanks for all of your answers. I hope that if I asked the wrong question that this clarifies it.

RA, If I'm understanding the question correctly, then sure, you can do that.

Let's try your Rose Red (text should now be your link to the photo)

If you want to enter it manually the syntax is:
{url=insert full url here}text to be linked{/url}
Replace the curly brackets with straight brackets so {=[ and }=]

... or you can use the little icons above the message block (where you type in the new message).

1. Type your text
2. hi-light the text you want to link
3. Click the link icon (3rd from the left).
4. A little pop-up will open and ask you for the url to link to.*
5. Enter URL for your link (or picture).
6. Click Ok

* Note that it already has the start of a full url there. Be sure not to end up with two "http://'s"

Let me know if I can help further. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

If I might add one instruction to Khan's. For photo's, right click on the photo you want to copy, there should be an offer to "COPY IMAGE LOCATION", then click the photo icon above (fourth icon from the left) and paste in the url that you've copied.

Example of those instructions.

So lets practice. Click this LINK

Use the last image available and right click on it. Click on Copy Image Location.

Open a response to this thread and click on the icon and paste in the Image Location you copied ... You should get this...

Thanks for your help with this guys. I'll play around with it a bit so you can ignore these next few posts.
