TECHNICAL QUESTION - HELP!!!!

Can someone help me with a technical question? I've recently updated my web browsers. But now, instead of gradually downloading the pics, where they gradually fill the page, nothing happens until the whole download is complete.
I much prefer the older way - where you get a gradual filling up.
Does anyone knopw how to change my browser settings to change back?
I really appreciate the help.

I don't think you'll always be able to have pics gradually download, because some sites have the pics completely load into RAM before they are displayed. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

what do you mean updated the browser?
Have you changed settings, downloaded add-ons or have you just downloaded the latest browser?

I've got the latest version of Opera and my pics load gradually.
Guessing it must be some setting you are on.

This has nothing to do with your browsers and everything to do with the photos you are downloading. There are many ways to encode a JPEG file, some allow for progressive downloads, others do not. You can read up on JPEG Compression methods here:

Wikipedia: JPEG Compression

Anyway, you could always just save time by downloading the zip files so you can look at every photo instantly. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Hi picdude - that's helpful to know! I've got the latest opera as well, and the problem persists! I suspect I've got some bug on the system, and I might have to take it to the computer doctor to get it cleaned out.

I can second what Toadsith says. What am I talking about? Toadsith's stuff doesn't need seconding! lol

Pics are oftentimes (if not always)enabled for progressive downloading. My webguy explained it to me once and I kind of followed what he said... before I passed out. www.rockchicksandbikerbabes.co.uk

Honestly, I think it is the sites that you are currently visiting - I really think taking it to a computer doctor that'll charge you $50 an hour will only succeed in lightening your wallet.

I need to rescind a bit of my previous comment, as some browsers do appear to handle these things differently. For example, take this huge Sample Photo from Hegre Art (4300 x 6000, 7.49 MB). Google Chrome loaded progressively, displaying large swaths of the image at a time. As did Firefox, unsurprisingly, as it shares the same Mozilla core with Chrome. IE 7 loaded a tiny slice of it, sat for a while, and then displayed the whole picture. This photo is standard Progressive Scan JPEG prepared by Adobe Photoshop using the Save For Web feature set at the default quality of 65 (according to a nifty little program called JPEGsnoop).

I still am not entirely sure why the progressive displaying of the photos is all that important - but I hope all this helps you make sense out of what is going on. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

From Wikipedia: JPEG
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG

There is also an interlaced "Progressive JPEG" format, in which data is compressed in multiple passes of progressively higher detail. This is ideal for large images that will be displayed while downloading over a slow connection, allowing a reasonable preview after receiving only a portion of the data. However, progressive JPEGs are not as widely supported, and even some software which does support them (such as some versions of Internet Explorer) only displays the image once it has been completely downloaded.

Bolding is mine to point out the relevant statement.

Having your browser set to automatically resize images or for smart dithering *may* also be a factor in the browser needing to download the entire image before it can be displayed. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Hi toadsith - I'll follow up your suggestions; it's helpful to know. One 'fetish' I have with pics is to look at them as I DL - watching them appear gradually is a bit like watching the girl strip.

Ah - that makes sense, I hadn't looked at it that way. Well best of luck with your hunt for a solution - I'd say give Google Chrome a shot, as it seems to still behave that way. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"
