Hardware/Software question

I am thinking of a new computer or upgrading the one I have. Any suggestions on hardware or software options other then just a big hard drive.

Any suggestions for inproving download speed? I have a cable modem with 6MB of download speed but I seem to have a download speed closer to 680KB/sec. Any suggestions for improving performance?

Disk drive? I also have a twin amd athlon 5000 processors

If it were me, I'd simply focus on buying the best I could afford. With that in mind, I'd focus mostly on the processor; the most expensive item to upgrade. Hard drives aren't that importent since they're getting cheaper and are easy to upgrade, plus you can attach externals, assuming you already don't have one or more. Thus, I'd focus on getting processing speed (quad core probably). Otherwise, the rest is up to you. If you like games and movies then you'll need a good graphics package. If not, that allows more money for a better processor.

As for download speeds, I don't know that much about them other than it might be your provider that's causing the slower speeds. Depending on where you are on the "chain" of subscribers, you can't sometimes can't get fast downloads because there are a lot of other cable or DSL subscribers hogging bandwidth ahead of you. Your computer's processor doesn't have much to do with download speeds unless your using an old machine/processor or your sucking up much larger bandwidths than what you currently have. Sometimes, its just your bandwidth provider. They advertise "speeds up to ..." meaning that you rarely see top end download speed. Some of the PUer's with a better tech background might have more insight on this one. Edited on Apr 17, 2009, 01:38pm

Add as much RAM as you can afford. After the processor, the thing that typically makes the biggest improvement in day-to-day performance is more RAM. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Modems measure their speed in Megabits, your browser measures speed in Kilobytes. A byte is 8 bits, so your maximum download speed is at most 768 Kilobytes per second. Most ISPs don't provide their rated maximum speed at all times, especially peak time. You are reporting 88.5% of your rated speed, so that isn't too bad.

I'd recommend switching to higher speed plan if you want better speeds. Most cable companies have a high speed plane that will get you into the range of 20 Megabits per second, aka 2.5 Megabytes per second (2560 kilobytes) - but it usually costs about $80 a month. As above get the best you can afford... 3 years ago I brought a cheap laptop and found it painfully slow so I replaced it with a better one three years later and it's still going strong and doing everything quickly that I need bar perhaps playing the latest games (it plays COD4 so i'm happy)
I've got a desktop I brought top of the line about 5 years ago that feels quicker than the cheap pc's right now.
There are things that change but if you get the best the amount of changes needed are small...you can by external blu ray drives, harddrives etc for just a little more than internal ones so spend the money at the start and live a stress free life... (If you get a dell get really think about extended support.

Also is it just me but this Bit and Byte lark i really annoying especially when the average person gets things confused and you have to sit there explaining the differences.

Talking about download speed. Don't use wireless!! Go with wire!! Use some good quality ethernet cables (but a short one if you can't afford it) Just connect from your router to your PC or MAC. and YES more RAMS always help. But really matters is which plan you got from your provider. 6Mbps is standards to me now. AT&T highest is 6Mbps, ComCast and Atlantic BB both have 12Mbps offers. If you want more than that Verizon's FIOS can reach up to 50 Mbps LOL .. it's Money talks now.. MAXMIXDV.COM
