My Rage

Since more than a few people have made references to my anger in their posts, I thought it might be nice to "put it all out there" so you can understand what I lovingly call "my rage". It might surprise some of you that I really do get a kick out of it when people think they understand why I appear so angry.

To start, you can look at what I had to say about my nick in my profile. "I love Humanity but, invariably, people just suck. There always seems to be someone right around the corner, trying to fuck things up." Some might call it sheer pessimism, I say, as I often do, that if you're not cynical, you're not paying attention. In my world, assholes abound. From little inconsiderations like people failing to say thank you when you hold a door for them, to the guy who bankrupts his own company, putting all his workers out on the street. From the guy who flips you off because you honked his horn at him when he cut you off, to the politician who passes a bill that doesn't affect his livelihood - I'll fight 'em all the best I can. It actually makes me happy to try to get people to justify their lack of responsibility to other people.

Yes, I have many joys in my life. Decent health, a niece and nephew I adore, an absolute love for Nature and music and, one of my favorite things, what I consider to be a good sarcastic wit. Maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I have fun with it. I laugh and smile more than anyone could imagine.

What people see here seems to clash with that picture of me and I find it really amusing. I'm just a cynic - one who's made it one of his goals in life to always speak out against anything that appears contrary to the truth. I know that truth is subjective, but I'm conceited enough to think I have a pretty good idea when people are full of shit. And, as I think you can tell, I'm more than happy to let them know it.

I hope all this eases the minds of anyone who pictures me climbing a tower with an assault weapon one day. That's not me at all!

The rage continues!

That could be me posting that, but then I am usually quite angry myself. When I'm not angry I'm a "grumpy old man." Yes we should be angry for all the reasons you state, and because the bad guys rule and always will. Doesn't mean we have to like it. Exotics is just too far away to book an appointment. Someone told me the other day if I had an analyst he'd slit his wrists. It's okay to be angry, it means you're thinking about things. "If you're not cynical you're not paying attention," fits perfectly, because it's the truth.

It wasn't just you that's noted my anger - and I've never taken anyone's mentioning it to heart. Like I said - I get a kick out of it.

It's funny you mentioned the slitting the wrists. I was talking to a psychologist years ago - and found out years later the guy shot himself in the head. Maybe I should find another one to see what he thinks about how that's impacted my life.

It's also funny you call yourself a grumpy old man. There's a chat room full of people I've been talking to for about 10 years now and they have a text replace for anyone typing my nick - Grouchy Old Fucker.

All in all, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's not afraid to be angry. Rage on!

Edit: I didn't realize that my text replaced nick was a website - too funny!

The way I see it, folk of a certain age are often expected to be grouchy.

I have to admit I have come to enjoy a good rant myself.

That is both as Ranter & Rantee!

Rants are good for the soul & purge stress.

They often acheive nothing other than to make you feel better for having vented.
If they inform or entertain others that is a bonus.

That is good enough in itself for me!

Lol! I love pointing out and making fun of your 'rage' as often as possible. Whenever I read one of your angry comments or replies I picture your old avatar (an old angry headshot, if I'm not mistaken) and can't help but wonder how related it is to the 'raging Buddha' in you. The nice thing about ribbing you about your anger is you understand it for what it is--humor! You don't cry and whine and then go suspend your account.

I myself am a proud cynic as well and definitely understand your signature "If you're not cynical, you're not paying attention," because it explains so much about the world. I have never followed, much less understood, the philosophy of "Ignorance is bliss," as how can anyone be that happy if they are really that ignorant? I have never been one to live life with blinders on, all the while smiling and blithering like an idiot to whomever is within earshot.

I'm not nihilistic or psychotic but just realistic. Not quite the George Carlin philosophy of "I don't have pet peeves, I have major psychotic fucking hatreds! And it makes the world a lot easier to sort out," but a little closer to the Lewis Black approach of "Hey listen, you fuck! You're an idiot!" Life sucks, you suck, Krypton sucks, and so on (not sure about that third one, but it sounded right...).

Also like you mentioned, RB, pointing out some of this idiocy can be fun, at least in moderation. Yes, I honk at shitty drivers, but not at the ones with visible gun racks or police escorts. And of course when it all comes back to you and you're the idiot, then, well, at least you learn something. "You mean you can't fix a hard drive with a hammer? Ooops!"

Oh, and your comment;

Don't worry, I never thought that at all, and probably neither did anyone else. But I can empathize because I think I have had to assure at least a few people that, no, I'm not psychotic (not that there's anything wrong with that!), just very cynical;
-"Oh, he's not a nutcase after all, just pissed off."
-"Yeah, and kind of and an asshole too."

D'oh! I guess it comes with the territory. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove

Hey, RB, I've never held your rage against you. If I did, we'd probably both suffer from severe friction burns ...

But all joking aside, I think that "Raging Buddhist" is one of the most colorful monikers here at PU. I don't get the "Buddhist" part about you personally, but to me the obvious conceptual clash of "rage" and "Buddhism" amounts to a very original and oxymoronic expression of our tragic human condition. When enlightened, all is clear and we become indistinguishable from those things that "made" us angry. Trouble is, such clarity (and harmony) is evasive! We're too easily overcome once again by our inner demons, which are -- in a flash -- triggered by the demons that dwell in others.

You know, like that last asshole who gave you a hard time at work just because he could get away with it.

Anyway, to me "Raging Buddhist" is simply brilliant. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Y'all are just too damn smart. Okay - so the speech wasn't necessary cuz I didn't scare anyone. I don't know whether to be relieved or pissed off. It would've been nice to see at least one person thanking me for clearing it up. Oh well... It's nice to know I'm not the only angry person in here. Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Drooler - the Buddhist part comes from a few things. It's from my disdain for Western religion and the thought that, if anyone has it right, it's the Eastern disciplines. Plus, as you noted, I like the contradiction in terms.

And a special thanks to you - I don't get the word brilliant applied to too much here. (Another cheesy grin)

OK then.

Thanks for facing them down.

I wouldn't have had the patience to remain civil a tenth as long as you did.

Dear RB,
I beg your pardon. Tongue in cheek I mentioned that I wanted to give you a second trust vote. I think that was a thank you. There were several who repeatedly posted responses. I for one was also insulted personally twice. This was a group effort, each in our own way. On a postive note, yes to PU power! RB for president!

I don't want to disagree with you but after reading this I have to say that you are not a cynic but a realist. You see the way the world is and you still find joy in it. A cynic will never find joy in anything. I'm a realist. I sometimes wish I wasn't but since I know some of the other choices are less palatable so I stick with reality. Long live the Brown Coats.

I should probably wait to respond to this, but I did say I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I just came back from fishing. I got a little too much sun for the first trip out on the lake and I guess my body hasn't adjusted to being back on land yet - the head's still rolling with the waves and I'm a bit confused here. Several who repeatedly posted responses to...? I insulted you twice? Sorry - I'm really out of it right now.

6 Pike and 2 yellow perch in just under 3 hours!

Oh - and I can't accept the nomination. Fishing good, politicians bad. Thanks anyway.

RB, no complaints regarding you, so sorry for any confusion I may have caused. What I was referring to was the latest debacle we had here with MH and her followers. She insulted me personally twice and waht I meant to say was that the effort to answer her ridiculous insulting behavior was a group effort. PS I love fish, save me some.

Whew... Not guilty for a change.

I don't keep too many fish - pretty much only good sized yellow perch or trout. But, if you're ever driving down to Maryland, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Lol! Now that would be funny; RB is nominated to run for president and at his acceptance speech he takes the podium and says "You're all a bunch of moronic sheeple. You can take your nomination and shove it up your ass! Good day," as he walks off to gasps of horror and a smattering of applause. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it?
