VLC Substitute needed! VLC Player has acted up real badly on me since its last two upgrades. They experienced compatibility problems with ATI graphics and I was hoping their latest patch would correct this but no dice. Does anyone know of a similar open source player where the picture can be sharpened by default. I think WMP is a classy, good looking player but only lets you adjust color etc. but NOT sharpness. It's an important feature for me because I like my picture "crisp" when watching downloaded movie clips and with WMP they all look a bit too soft! Thanks! Edited on Aug 03, 2010, 01:29pm

If the older versions worked, why change players? I'd go to oldversion.com and go back to a functioning version. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Thanks for your help, guys! I did the smart thing and went back to the January 2010 version of VLC as one of you suggested. All is well now except that the beginning of all HD videos is always a five second, torn up, distorted picture mess. But then VLC has always done that to me so I can put up with it as long as the rest of the video is clear.

I haven't been totally happy with the VLC player myself in recent months. I get a lot of pixilating when I use the slider.

Yes, you sure do get pixelating when using the slider, Goldfish. I've accepted this as the price you pay for using some of the features like sharpening that only VLC seems to possess. The last two upgrades aggravated things by also distorting a small portion of the picture on the bottom. As I mentioned above it apparently has something to do with using ATI graphics and I was hoping they had found a fix for that when I installed the latest.
