Is this a new site trend or is it just getting under my skin? I’m in the process of writing a review and noted that the site I’m reviewing does something that I’ve complained about a lot in recent reviews. I’m referring to the practice of a scene streaming automatically when you go to the scene’s page. I’m not suggesting that even a majority of sites do this now, but I don’t remember it happening as much in the past. As I see it, there are two obvious problems: one minor and one more serious. The minor one is that if you’re not expecting the scene to load automatically you might be in for a nasty surprise when your speakers blare the sounds of sex. You’re wife is in the next room and suddenly she hears a woman scream “Come on my face you manly studmuffin!” To which she wonders what the hell that is and you try to convince her that it was just a segment on the Colbert Report from last night. The solution is simply to just turn your speakers off. But the bigger problem is that automatically starting the stream hogs bandwidth and processing power for something I don’t want. Sure, I can pause the stream but as I click through the buttons to download the scene is still buffering. In my case I open multiple scenes in tabs to set them up for download and have to deal with a hit on bandwidth and processing power until I can select the download and close the window. So here’s what I’m wondering: am I a dinosaur in downloading? Is streaming becoming more popular than downloading? If streaming is more popular than downloading then this would make sense since the site can stream at a lower resolution than the user might otherwise select. But I have to admit that I’m stumped here. Does anyone have any idea why a webmaster would think that starting a stream automatically is a good idea? It seems to me that this would add up to a lot of wasted bandwidth for the site too. Thoughts?

Also if you open a load of pages at once in separate tabs you end up in sex-sound hell...so I always check on a new site if a video page will auto-stream and then attempt to work out how to stop it. I would go so far as to use a flash blocker (or html5 equivalent) just to stop this, web masters please don't do this! I feel much more protective over my porn than my regular films for some reason, but because of this I always download porn for keeps but I'm very happy to just stream films. go figure :s toby

Thanks RA for raising this issue. I don't like it either and for the same reasons, plus, if I'm moving quickly, I may not realize that a "streamer" may be lurking in background only to show up much later when I'm closing down. BTW I always turn my speakers off all the time. If I want sound, I'll switch them on again, but only then.

Yes Monahan I too keep my speakers silenced that way I get no nasty suprises. Streamers are indeed a pain in the butt. http://www.4shared.com/u/yCqCkfKs/andriad069inbox.html

It doesn't end with porn. The ESPN website is a prime offender of this rule and don't even get me started about the regular sites that just start automatically running advertisement vids and clips of other stuff on the sides of the web page. Can't think of anything more exciting than trying to read a news article online and suddenly having a Viagra ad blaring at you (yes, I keep my speakers turned off when I surf too). Makes me feel sorry for the folks who only have dsl or a dial up connection. The only reason I can think of why websites do this is that they base their advertising models on the premise that he who yells loudest does best. Look at me, I have moving pictures on my site, that means the customers will like me! I especially don't get it in that websites pay for band width and if someone is just looking about it seems that they're wasting money. Maybe I'm old fashioned in this sense but I don't get it either.

I also have serious bandwidth concerns and it's one of the main reasons why I still keep Firefox as my main browser, even though it's not the speed demon it used to be. Firefox is now just about as bloated as Internet Exploder - but it does allow for the use of an add-on called NoScript. NoScript can be set to where you have to manually click to allow a streaming video to run. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I go with speaker off always, they run through my stereo and its a push of the button, i'll share later why my porn might be wired to my stereo. Since 2007
