I really want to know

Some things just never settle in my head. Without mentioning the names of the sites, (especially one I've long avoided and frequently spoken out on) it really makes no sense to me that people will go back, time and time again, to sites with known billing (and other) issues. The comment sections for some of these sites are full of the words like, 'beware', 'scam' and 'ripoff', and yet people still take the plunge.

Why?

I don't get it.

WHY DO IT?

Help me understand. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Because they haven't read the reviews here first?

A few (possible) reasons:

1. the big fish factor
Big, well known sites have a lot of subscriptions. The more subscriptions, the higher the risk that something goes wrong somehow, may it be the site's fault or the member's stupidity. Simply formula: the more subscribers, the more complains. And the more complains, the higher the probablity that some of the angry customers are letting off some steam on a public forum. Happy customers are rarely giving feedback.

2. personal experience
Happened to me. I joined a site, eventually cancelled my subscription and then read some negative feedback about that site and how it used to rip off their customers... while I didn't have any problems at all. Result: trust in customer reviews is going down.

3. lazyness
Few people actually read reviews or site comments before joining a site. I guess that's one reason why so many bad porn sites are getting away with their business model.

In my (long and painful) experience, many people don't read anything.

One of my websites is photos only, there are no videos whatsoever on the site. Nowhere on the info pages, join pages and tour does it claim there are videos, I mention in all these places that there are no videos, at the top of the join page this is a bold, asterisked notice stating that there are no videos on the site, yet about once every month or I get an angry/abusive e-mail from another customer calling me a fraud etc., complaining that they signed up and were upset/shocked/amazed etc. to find that there are no videos there.

It's really irritating, but it keeps happening. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I'd guess that more than a few people join sites mid-wank and when they start thinking with their rational minds, buyers remorse sets in.

Perhaps it's a mild form of thrill seeking. Sure, it's not quite "A Wolverine is Eating My Leg" by Tim Cahill, but more like "A Porn Site is Fucking Up My Credit Score." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I think I know exactly which site you are talking about, RB. I subscribed to it some time ago without running into any problems and always wondered about the negative remarks by other users.

With a huge site I suppose errors are possible but they didn't happen to me. Downloads were plentiful and fast, quitting was easy, I was never charged for something I didn't want .. so all around it was a positive experience, except I would never go back because of all the huge, enhanced breasts that the site seems to specialize in. I do believe those who complain, but I also believe they are probably in the minority or your particular site would have long ago gone out of business. Or maybe I was just lucky?
