Time to Re-invent? It seems certain that the porn industry is in the doldrums at the moment. Currently, I think the main problem is there is too little diversity in commercial porn websites. Most of them seem to be gunning for exactly the same mainstream broad niches. This applies both to hardcore & softcore. Not all hardcore needs to be done the same way. Not all softcore has to be artsy. Webmasters, please do not get lost in the maelstrom. Show some flair & individuality. Cap'n. I just cranked out this sucker in response to a different thread but I guess it's basically the same response here. Woo-hoo, 2 posts for the price of one: "For "us" I think it's safe to say that porn is in something of a doldrums phase right now. By "us" I mean those of us who have been around the porn block a few times and have collections going back years which are consuming terabytes of external drives. We've seen all the big sites and the niches we like. We want quality (HD, big pics, good navigation, etc.), we want original content, we want a steady supply of updates and we want it at a reasonable price. When we first discovered on line porn we ate it all up at first (especially before the days of PU / TBP and other on line guides), got burned sometimes but still came back for more. Now, we sort of have the attitude of "been there, done that" and the thrill of the chase has diminished accordingly. There are sites out there featuring models and content that I like but I really don't go there because the quality isn't very good or the sites are almost dead in terms of updates. I'm unlikely to dive into some new site because they don't have enough content or because I don't know what the hell it's going to be like so I wait for a review or two to come up here or somewhere else. So, in a way, I've become self limiting in terms of what I'm willing to pay money to see and I think a lot of us are that way. Also, the porn industry has matured with bigger studios pushing the smaller ones out while the gobs of free / pirated porn make it harder for everyone in the industry to make a buck. The porn industry led the tech charge for a while with online charge systems, video playback and other gizmos but no more. The low hanging technological fruit have been picked so now it's just a question of looking for new models and gimmicks (parody porn, bad 3-D, pricing schemes, etc.). Porn is still a cheap and easy business to get into but giving "us" what we want is harder to do on a budget. To quote Billy Joel, "the good old days weren't always so good and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems". The early days of radio had lots of variety and participants but it was pretty much of a local ilk and wasn't on for much of the day. The early days of cable were cool because they had pro wrestling, some sports and a lot of movies; stuff that today is pretty ho-hum. Porn is still getting cranked out, every year more gets produced than the year before and even more sites come out. Most of it is vanilla to "us" because vanilla is what most everyone else wants (or what the producers think everyone wants). "Us" have essentially graduated from the McDonald's of porn to the world of fine dining where the offerings are fewer. In this sense, the "us" of PU have created a trap of our own making while the porn industry as a whole isn't really offering us anything new and great to reach out and grab onto. So, I say that porn is not dead and never will be so long as human beings have a sex drive. The industry as a whole has plateaued but will probably take off again as newer and better technology (3-D, holographics, etc.) comes along at reasonable price points."

Well, albeit more comprehensive & verbose way, I think we are on the same page here! Cap'n. With the market the way it is, I don't think most sites will dare invest in something different. For many sites if they try something new and it doesn't work, they won't recover. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

To me, shopping for porn is rather like shopping for clothes. I want variety, but nothing too weird. Most of what I look at I reject based on my own limited preferences. But I have to look through the selection to find what I like. I doubt that's going to change. The industry won't change much in the style of its content, and I won't change much, either. So it will just be as I've described it. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I would hazard a guess that indeed there are new ideas and technical innovations earmarked for INTERNET porn, just waiting in the wings... anxiously biding time for their turn to be called on to do their act. And with the "good, bad, and the ugly", currently being shoved on our plates by porn sites, the obvious "same ole' same ole' menu from which we're to order from is nudging me to believe the fruit from those new and fresh ideas already are ripe on the vines patiently awaiting the right kind of pressure to be put on mainstream porn promulgates to get off their rusty, dead asses, open waxy stuffed ears and seriously listen to the legion of subscribers who's seemingly proven to know more than they do about what we want. For those who don't have a clue about the point I'm trying to make here.... just let me leave you with an example. Virtual concepts already are out there which gives it's viewers not only his usual, favorite porn star's limited abilities to provide just visual erotic appeal .... but the source now offers a package which virtually puts you in the driver's seat ...to steer the action on whatever highway of sexual stimulus you want. What we have is the ultimate toy for men who want to clone and experience his most passionate, sexual desires. Unfortunately it ain't cheap. In fact it's dammed expensive. But it wouldn't be if the massive mainstream pay sites embraced it subsequently making it's subscribers available to afford it.. Consequently I may have to wait until my next lifetime.

It sounds like you're describing a form of psycho-active technology that would allow the user to experience (in addition to sight and sound) the senses of touch, taste, smell, balance and position. I think you're right, Graymane: the subscription would be a wee bit more than $29.95/month. And what if the medium got pushy? You try to unplug to grab some dinner or a take a nap and virtual Deb says: 'Hold it buddy, you're not going anywhere. Get back over here right now!' The so-called 'legit' film industry is pretty darn unoriginal, too. Seems like they'd rather churn out yet another CGI-fest, super hero/adventure flick (version 5) for $200,000,000 than fund 10 original efforts at twenty million each. Same deal with porn. In-your-face with lots of drooling and rough housing sells. Let's make some more of that. It might come down to making the investors happy by producing (perceived) low-risk product. Porn happens because a large number of things amazingly fail to go wrong.

Yeah, TF.... the whole nine yards (taste, smell, touch etc.,) Admittedly, all of that good stuff might be whittled down a tad to fit we perverts pocketbooks, but think of the mind-blowing possibilities ie, real time copulating with his majesty in the back seat of a Mercedes Benz. Want to know more??? just ask Google.

I agree that one will have to be ahead of the curve on this one. Kinda like back in the 1980's if you owned a porn picture site and were not ready when video came to the internet you were chasing cars like a scared dog. Any one that takes on something new in porn can set a tone for the future. Real porn does not exist yet. the Fantasy is literately in our brains soon in the near future there will be an interactive porn the likes would have been in Star Trek. Our friends in Japan are very very close to real interactive sex with real life like models that can run a sex program. You put in VR as well and you could be having sex with a porn model while you are someone else. Porn will die off if something else does not occur soon doing what everyone else is doing will not increase revenue or sustain porn in my opinion. Since 2007

It doesn't necessarily have to mean large investment in new tech. Just think out of the box with existing tech. Provide something to the market which dozens of other websites aren't doing. Cap'n.
