Porn sites and downloaded video file sizes

In my experience, when it comes to pay sites and downloaded content, there are three kinds of site:

1. The downloaded video files are encoded with a bit rate that's too low for the frame size, and so the quality suffers leading to soft or blurry scenes, but the file size is smaller.
2. The video files are encoded with a bit rate that's overkill for the frame size, so the file is much larger but the quality is excellent.
3. The video files are encoded with a bit rate that's suitable for the frame size so that the quality is just fine and the file size is reasonable.

Thankfully, very few sites fall into the first category, but there are a few. Quite a few of the US sites fall into the second category, with file sizes that are around 50% larger than they need to be. The European sites seen to fall into the third category, striking the balance between file size and video quality.

IMHO and from experience, the following bit rates are the optimum balance of file size and video quality for MP4 files:
For 1920x1080 a bitrate of around 8000Kbps
For 1280x720 a bitrate of around 4000Kbps

I've found that using a video convertor program to recode some of my content yields disk space savings of around 30%, so saving money.

Does anyone else here check the bit rates of downloaded content to see if it's overdone? Or is it something that doesn't concern you, 'cos after all, storage is cheap?

My video converter uses 1920x1080 at 8000Kbps as a default. A lot of scenes of those dimensions are at a much higher bitrate. It saves me disk space to convert the files, but usually I only worry about it when I'm running out of storage room.

I also edit down some files to get only the action I want. That significantly reduces the size of some files. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

Which video convertor do you use? A long time ago I tried free ones but found them to be slow and limited, so I shelled out for AnySoft's Any Video Convertor when I managed to get a good discount om it. I used AVC for years, but as I started downloading more and more 1080 content, I found it could take a few hours to recode a 40 minute video so I looked for something faster and found Movavi which is much faster.

Like you, I sometimes edit a video to remove the 30 minutes or so of the girl playing with herself at the start of the video before the cocks come in for the hardcore action.

IMO it's not worth the time, electric bill, or quality loss to re-encode video. Maybe it's worth cutting out portions of a scene you don't want, but I wouldn't do any re-encoding personally.

You're correct about the ideal bit rate, I'm talking about x264 and I usually go for the "middle" or standard setting when re-encoding which yields good results and no noticeable loss of quality as far as I'm concerned.

In terms of the time it takes, I just line up the videos to be converted and leave it running. Also I have a script that uses the MediaInfo utility to retrieve the bitrate for the files and list them so that I can pick out the files I want to re-encode at the lower bit rate, usually 8000k for 1080p content or 4000k for 720p.

I use VSDC Video Editor-Free Edition. It's a free program from Flash Integro. I've never had any problems with it.

I usually use the "highest quality" setting when editing videos. I do that fairly frequently, but don't usually mess with changing the file sizes of most vids. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

I check bitrates. Even though storage is relatively cheap I want to find the best balance between file size and video clarity.

I won't claim any technical prowess but it seems that some scenes have impressive specs and still look crappy. I can't think of any sites that do this offhand but I have some files that have decent specs but are still pixilated.

I Handbrake every video I download. This can be a very time consuming action but it saves me valuable disk space and so far I haven't noticed any significant loss of quality.
