I don't know if I'd say that farts are funny by themselves but more the situation in which they are heard/smelled is.

I seem to remember a joke in one of the Jackass movie was about guys farting into a mask that one of the other guys was wearing. I see nothing remotely funny about that and that's full of farts. Long live the Brown Coats.

I also think the same way but there is still a percentage of the population that thinks it's funny because the first one made 79 millions worldwide, the second one did better with 84 millions and the last one did 170 millions. Long live the Brown Coats.

Call me a humorless old relic but I detest fart "jokes" and can't, for the life of me, understand why anyone would find them funny.

I remember going to a lecture given by Dick Gregory. Part of the early phase of it was a routine about farts. It was funny, but that was due to his delivery. A joke can go flat (to say nothing of flatulent) or be a gas (ha-ha), depending on how artful the storyteller is.

Once I found a web site with a collection of recordings of actual farts. It's nice to be able to listen while leaving the other senses alone. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I don’t have to, you just did

Why is anything funny? If you dissect humor what do you find?
Humor is a shift in context. With one of the simpler form of humor, the pun, the shift of meaning from one homonym to another is a surprise to the listener. Laughter is the reaction.

If you look at why something is funny, the progression undergoes that shift in context. Farts are never in context. They are most always a contextual shift. Even when they are in context, like in a farting contest, laughter ensues.

I like to think I am capable of the appreciation of sophisticated humor but baser humor occasionally evokes laughter in me. A character flaw perhaps, but I suspect I laugh a lot more than someone not so afflicted.

From Wikipedia: A joke creates an inconsistancy and the audience automatically try to understand what the inconsistency means; if they are successful in solving this 'cognitive riddle and they realize that the surprise was not dangerous, they laugh with relief

John Morreall theorized that human laughter may have its biological origins as a kind of shared expression of relief at the passing of danger

Freud summarized it in his theory that laughter releases tension and psychic energy. This theory is one of the justifications of the belief that laughter is beneficial for one's health

Successful jokes involve a cognitive juxtaposition of mental sets, followed by an affective feeling of amusement

Warning: fart joke to follow.

The old guy was becoming infirm and was unable to care for himself.
His kids discussed his going to an old folks home and did a little research of some local facilities. They then discussed it with the old boy and it was decided they would take him to one of the places to see if he liked it. They dropped him off and he went to the rec room to get a feel for the place. He sat in an upholstered chair and visited with some of the residents. At one point he began to tip over to one side and an attendant quickly grabbed and steadied him, wedging a pillow at his side for support. After a short time he began to drift to the other side, and again, the attendant steadied him and placed another pillow at his side for support.
Later that afternoon, his kids returned to check on their dad. "How'd you like the place Pop?"
"Well" he replied, "The people here are real nice, and the food's pretty good, but you know......

they don't let you fart here"

Knowing ahead of time that this was to be a fart joke, removed the suprise and made this not as funny, but I still titter. unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.

They're funny because they go against social etiquette.

Also, I find Jackass movies incredibly funny. Because of the reason stated above and more.

An answer to you and Micha:

I think this is the reason why a younger generation finds the new comedians funny while we (my generation) don't. With Newhart, Berman (my two favorites), Don Rickles, Jack Benny, Jonathan Winters, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, the early Richard Prior, the early Phyllis Diller etc. jokes revolved mostly around absurd and funny situations.

Then came that Jewish boy (not trying to be offensive, I really can't think of his name at the moment) who wanted to test the bourgeoisie's limits of tolerance, and loved to see them turn red with anger, when it came to the "f" word and others that were considered to be taboo at the time.

Ever since, most comedies and comedians have followed his example and concentrate on shocking folks like me while their present day audience howls with laughter.

I've really tried to understand and get used to the new ways since I want to get my money's worth out of HBO but can't muster up a single laugh when it comes to the new crop of comedians or gross-out movies. To me potty humor just isn't funny.

Times have changed and not only in Porn.

Please be aware that I am simply stating my opinion and have no quarrel with those who think fart jokes are funny. To each his own. Long live freedom of expression!

Thank you, Khan, that's exactly who I was thinking of. I felt terribly bad that I had to refer to him like that. Almost like blasphemy to not remember the name of one of the greats in comedy, even though his humor did not appeal to me, personally , even though I was always a bit of a rebel myself.

Typed on a tablet in bed! Ain't progress grand?

Back to the PC in the a.m.:

Something I couldn't do last night on the tablet (see above) and that was to mention that I consider Lenny Bruce to be the watershed when it comes to comedy in the 20th Century.

There is pre-Lenny Bruce humor and post-Lenny Bruce humor. That makes him an icon in the field. Like him or not. Edited on Apr 10, 2012, 09:34am

Fart:

is the expulsion through the rectum of a mixture of gases that are byproducts of the digestion process of mammals and other animals. The medical term for the mixture of gases is flatus, informally known as a fart, The gases are expelled from the rectum in a process colloquially referred to as "passing gas", "breaking wind" or "farting". Flatus is brought to the rectum by the same peristaltic process which causes feces to descend from the large intestine. The noises commonly associated with flatulence are caused by the vibration of the anal sphincter, and occasionally by the closed buttocks.

Maybe they are a form of laughing gas since they suck the oxygen out of the air! A true neck-lover.
