Windows freeze....download manager - anybody? Lately I've got quite a few total Windows freeze - when starting to download with IDM (only): http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/ Total freeze - nothing else to do, but to cut the power/restart. Been using IDM for many years...and this has occured a few, very few times - in the past. But now it's a couple of times a week. Been downloading their updates/upgrades and using Driver Max to keep my drivers top. Guess it only has to do with the ol' IDM - anybody else has experienced that...? I'm using IDM myself and never had any Windows freezes. However, what I *do* have is that after a couple of hours of downloading, my internet connection is getting slower and slower until it finally stops for good.

Denner - have you tried uninstalling IDM and going back to the last version that didn't give you problems? I think just about everybody has run into something like this before. Something in an update puts a glitch in the registry and... well... problems result. I'm a firm believer in that newer isn't always better. Before I update a program or install new software, I use my backup app to make an image of my system drive. That way, if I've updated or installed something that starts giving me problems, and reverting back to an earlier version doesn't help, I have a copy of a stable operating system. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I do not use IDM (I use Free Download Manager or DownThemAll or the paid version of GetRight). I agree with RagingBuddhist. But when this kind of thing (Windows freezes ) has happened to me, it has always been the fault of an update to antivirus or firewall software. Freezes are a conflict between low level drivers so the fault does not necessary lie with IDM. If uninstalling IDM and using an older version does not help or is not acceptable, you could try looking on the forum of your antivirus or firewall, if there is one.

Will try all above....funny how annoying things still now and then appears with Windows programs....but not anything like the first years of the first/early Windows - days and days of fighting, remember? But thanks, fellow PUs. "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Do you have any kind of Cache cleaner? I know some of these DLM's will leave temp files and after awhile they get pretty big. I use the free CCleaner works well. Since 2007

Thanks, Cyber...oh, yes have my CCleaner and carefully updated (great free program, btw) - but only use it for registry cleaning - every time I use it for "clean up" - I loose all my passwords - and have to do them manually all over again - any sugestions..? Gees never answered sorry about that. In CCcleaner there is a box for firefox, and IE and chrome to save the passwords and not clean them. Does that help ? CT Since 2007
