Hey, I'm not bashing TBP. I think that early on they might have innocently mixed up MB and Mb.

But honestly, they did some testing for me and at least seem sensitive now that there's a big difference between capital B and lower b. Plus, it's more than any other review site is doing.

james' point is a good one. If I'm running my content out of one or two servers, you'd definitely have to cap the B/W per user to ration it out.

I had this talk with the folks at TBP who are on a 50 Mbit connect and are referencing download speeds in their reviews. This is definitely helpful info for the users.

However, I think that at least in the older reviews, they confused megabit and megabyte, because I saw some very shoddy sites with huge download speeds that made no sense.

I'd estimate that most garden variety porn sites are hosted on traditional servers that cannot achieve much more than 100Mb output. This is due to I/O on the hard drives vs. actual pipe to the server.

So 2, 50Mb users would max out a single server.

This is a roundabout way of saying that I think the smaller sites will generally give you no benefit of your high bandwidth service.

The larger sites that are using more robust content delivery should allow you to max it out, ie. separate the men from the boys.

We could also get into latency...but that's a topic for another day :)

H.264 is the standard for cable and satellite transmission. As an FYI, DirecTV broadcasts its HD content at 1.5Mbps. Obviously, that's encoded well enough for most people to not complain.

Thus, there's a law of diminishing returns with encoding. As I've said on other posts, over-encoding creates unnecessarily huge files, which maybe be problematic for a guy like Pat32.

On the higher default size --- that has nothing to do with the quality of the encoding. It's not like the video has been optimized for that resolution. It's just the native display area. I could take a a 300K video for iPod and encode at 1920 x 1080. It would look like shit when played, but if you sized it down in your player, it would be fine.

We were 100% WMV from '06 to '08. At that time, I always thought that WMV videos had a very, very faint dullness to them. Almost a matte.

Most know that I'm a fanboy of H.264 now. But for your site in question, I would investigate that AVI some more. It will also be more compatible if you're burning DVDs for TV use.

The file sizes are close (indicating similar compression). Keep in mind, that the screen sizes are just the default viewing area. It has no bearing on the video quality...just the encoding does.

Take the Pepsi challenge on the WMV and AVI...I'd be curious about your results.

Copying shouldn't have ill effects either. Digital files consist of 0's and 1's.

A digital file can't become less crisp or blurry without modification. It might as well turn black or pink.

So as long as the file data hasn't changed, neither has the output.

Oh, don't get conned into buying expensive HDMI or other digital cables. Degradation is mostly an analog concept. Digital is all or none.

If compressed files could degrade, then the digital world would be screwed.

For instance, all of your MP4s, WMVs or any compressed video would degrade thru repeated playback.

Not to mention, compressed Winzip files, exe's, etc.

This doesn't happen because the act of uncompressing the file for usage has no impact on the source file. It remains intact.

It's the instance of re-saving where the issue is. For the common user, rotating a file image can cause a re-save. Even then, the effects are not substantial but can accrue over many times.

The best analogy is a photocopier. What happens when you keep copying a copy? But if you are always viewing the original, you're fine.

Drooler's got some good stuff in there. But I would suggest the following correction -- JPEGs cannot degrade from opening and closing --- only from editing and resaving, thereby imposing additional compression.

So view all your images until you guys are blue in the face...the quality won't be affected at all. Otherwise, all us webmasters would be constantly having to redo our static assets.

Yup, she was in Anthony Spinelli's groundbreaking classic, Reel People. Never realized she was that old as well.

It looks like Global Crossing's backbone is having issues. Depending on how your ISP connects to a website, you could be experiencing problems.

I've tested on 2 other huge websites as well and seen the same. If you run a tracert, you can see the crap out.

Since it's Christmas eve, hopefully too many people won't be up in arms. Unless I'm wrong, it looks like a huge piece of the Internet superhighway is broken in certain areas.

Cool, then you'll appreciate that the issue probably has nothing to do with the file naming. There's no way that these sites store all that native content with the same name. The issue is how their CMS is designed (perhaps poorly, as you suggest), and more specifically, their authentication/security scheme.

When files are all named the same, they are using an obfuscation technique vs. a modern day token auth. The homogeneous name is created in the SAVE AS to keep you from seeing the real file name and surmising where/how it's stored (to prevent theft).

These are all serious issues that the really relate to content storage and delivery.

Obviously, nothing is past the point of no return. But practically speaking, there may not be enough incentive to address the issue.

Thanks for the compliment. The issue comes down to how the site's content management system is designed. For established sites like you've referenced, they are probably past the point of no return.

We've always just named our files in this fashion since day one. But you're not the first person to mention this pet peeve.

Beware that most video joining programs actually re-encode the video and cause quality loss.

If you're doing WMV's, the program by MovieToolBox is the best and worth the small cost. The files must be identically encoded.

I have yet to find a true MP4 joiner.

At AmericanVice.com, we're one of the few sites with hybrid pricing. We have unlimited and a la carte. Our pay per scene is as low as $0.79 and you get 5 downloads free for registering with no credit card. Sorry for the shameless self-promotion :)

That's precisely my point. PU does a GREAT job of highlighting cross-sells. As does TBP in fact.

So my comment was really more directed at people who still get snared by cross-sells and bogus trials, with all this great information and red flags readily available.

Khan,

I respectfully disagree with your comment. The reason why coffee is cheaper in Po-Dunk relates to the cost of labor, rent and utilities, ie. the price needed for an equivalent profit. It has nothing to do with what the market will bear. Even in airport locations, the high prices are driven by exorbitant lease provisions.

As a US based webmaster, I considered the upside in taking advantage of the weak US dollar by doing regional pricing. So let's not kid ourselves - that's exactly what's going on here. I personally think it's bullshit to penalize non-US customers.

It boggles my mind to see people on PU constantly griping about regional pricing, BS trials and sneaky cross-sells. Vote with your wallets, people.

Amber Rayne has been mentioned a couple times. We're BIG fans.

I'll probably get bitched out for linking. But here's a crazy scene of hers.

My second would be Melissa Lauren. We have a scene with her and Coffee Ron where your jaw will be on the floor. She's a true rough sex devotee and not some on-camera fabrication.

Here's what Ezra said of a recent scene:

I majorly like Melissa Lauren, but I don't see her as fitting the idea of an "anal queen." She's almost too hardcore for that. Let me explain. Remember when Ricky Williams said, "fuck it" to the NFL and disappeared down to Jamaica or wherever to smoke weed for a year or two? The guy was arguably the most naturally talented running back in the league. He could have spent the next eight to ten years of his life playing football, but he had nothing to prove. Ricky suits up now just to pay the bills and is still amongst the top fantasy performers. It's not his true love, yet he continues to do it. That's the Melissa Lauren approach to porn. She is one of the most naturally badass whores that you'll ever come across. It's not like she needs some phony title to prove anything. She does porn scenes to pay the bills.

About a week ago, we posted a video on AmericanVice.com from Marie Madison...she's an amateur with an Internet following. Her stuff is the complete antithesis of glossy, porn valley product.

We've got another one of her movies coming up next week. Depending on the exposure that she gets from us, Marie may offer us more of her vids.

At AmericanVice.com, we're more than happy to take whatever your currency converts into as US dollars.

If your currency strength makes our product ridiculously cheap, then you can thank your business leaders for having such a robust economy and subsidizing your porn habit!!!
